Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. If you are on a journey towards self-love, this support group is for you. Join us and find others...

So in February it's my good friend's birthday and my dad's birthday. My friend is not having the usual get together with all of us women as it's gotten pretty heated. I feel a bit bad, like I caused the rift and the fall apart as I spoke up recently about being uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable with people pressuring me to try and function at my normal level with a badly broken leg. I felt I needed to set boundaries there.
As a result, they either have decided to carry on without me, or the group is just drifting. My friend finally called me yesterday. She said that she's not going to be doing group things anymore. I guess that's fair. About three or four years ago she was expressing discomfort and doubt about our friend group-she felt that one person was very narcissistic. I was also feeling very unseen, unheard and disrespected in general. I finally spoke up and said that I felt like I was just sitting there, while others talked and talked and talked about themselves. I felt so unimportant. I gradually felt like things just revolved around others. It hit a crisis point when I broke my leg before my graduation party. I had the sense one person wanted to take control of the situation and sort of make it about her-her choice of activities and venue, all the while when I was housebound and in pain. Per my doctor I had to cancel social events. She started to take the reins and initiate plans about my event without consulting me. It was too dangerous for me to go out, so I spoke up. This is also the same person that moved cross country into my friend's house, quit her job, and is now totally dependent on her. Weird situation. She's been there six months now and I really want to stay out of that.
After I spoke up, well everything fell apart, or I've being dropped. I'm sad we won't be celebrating my friend's birthday.
Also it is my dad's birthday-the same week. I wasn't invited this year. I have a very fraught history with him. Back in the day, he was an alcoholic and very violent. There were several years that we didn't speak. He was also severely narcissistic. In the past years my mom has been trying to get me back involved. I had declined to attend his birthday last year not because of him, but because my brother is also very violent and explosive. We did do Christmas and Thanksgiving together this past season, which says a lot given the history. But it looks like I won't be asked to his birthday. It occurred to me, and then I remembered: "This is the man who was so abusive when I was a teenager, that he told me he wished he could beat me up even worse-to the point I would have to have plastic surgery to even be recognizable." True story. This happened when I was ninteen. This memory came back to me and then I realized...oh here we are again...this was the hot and cold narcissist...the one who told me as a child he wanted to expel me from Christmas...and why am I disappointed in his old age that it's gone this way??? It's not like he's a different person...just very old now. As a child he was extremely violent and unpredictable. Could never tell when he was sober or drunk, lucid or insane. I may not be missing anything and to an extent am somewhat unbothered.

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.
Yes, the hot and cold stuff is a way of controlling others. It makes people desperately want to be back into the in-group so they do anything to appease or grovel. But you said he was a drunk then and well, that kind of language is par for the course with some alcoholics. It was very hurtful to you. And it was verbal abuse plain and simple. I understand why this would haunt you and it could be the most helpful to your emotional wellness to not be bothered by being in the out-group with your folks this year.
Your mom likely wants to pretend she has a happy family and a great husband. It is a way of coping. Just don't be like her, keep being willing to face things with reality and head on. Know and recognize who people are and how they are. Stay strong, and find the courage to make changes if the people you are attached to are not able to have a positive relationship with you. Sometimes people disappoint us. Sometimes we disappoint other people.
The other thing that occurred to me is are you sure they are actually celebrating his birthday this year? Things come up, people get sick, etc.
We have relatives that like to do the not inviting certain people, putting them in this year's out-group, mostly it is us! We learned to not care, we learned not to be angry about it but see it as a blessing. Just think, you don't have to deal with his anger issues this birthday of his. Don't disqualify the positive.
Your friendship group continues to sound very dysfunctional and I am proud of you for recognizing it. Sometimes this happens to us. We long for our friends to be good friends, mature people, etc. When they really aren't and when being around them is no longer all the fun or pleasant. People grow and mature, well some people. And others stay stunted, immature, or ignore mental health problems all their lives. Some people change for the better and some do not. Some people are good people and others are users. Keep moving forward in your life.
All we can do is be the type of people we would admire and say are good people. All we can do is be someone of high character and able to give love.
Hope your healing goes well!
