Point of letting go -Law of attraction vs stoicism
Has anyone looked into law of attraction? I came across Abraham Hicks when I looked up for things like “letting go”, “go with the flow” and “trust the universe.” Which are things I’m trying to do so I was listening to what she said and then got sucked into the whole “manifestation” thing where she talked about getting, or manifesting, your desires and what you want by aligning your vibrational frequency to that of the universe and then the universe will give everything that you want.
And then I fell in my old trap of trying to control things to get what I want. In this case, it was trying to control my vibrational frequency so we could get the lease to the apartment transferred for Spring. We’ve had multiple viewings and he hates them and calls the whole process of having strangers look at our home a nightmare which is understandable. A few months ago I would have been horrified and hating myself for putting him through this process. Now I’m finding the humour in it and feeling more peaceful but I would like the process to be over. I was telling my friend we have four people coming to look at the apartment this weekend and one of them better take it, and then stopped myself because I thought “that’s the wrong vibrational frequency! I have to believe the desire is already achieved or else it won’t manifest” and then I realized I’m trying to control things again.
Which makes me wonder about this law of attraction thing and what is the point of letting go. Law of attraction says trust the universe and let go and your desires will manifest. You’ll get money, health, love, your heart desires! Which kind of goes against what I was working on with stoic philosophy which was accept your reality and situation and look for happiness not with external stuff.
Interesting how they both talk about going with the flow and not resisting. It’s just that Law of Attraction says that if you let go, go with the flow and not resist you’ll get what you want and stoicism says if you let go, go with the flow and not resist, you’ll find inner peace no matter what your situation is. The problem with stoicism though is that if I could inner peace in any situation, I could get comfortable and not want to change things. For instance, things aren’t miserable with my partner now so I think, “this isn’t so bad. It’s not what I want but i’m not miserable and I can be fine with us living like strangers.”
So I guess what I’m asking is, what is the point of letting go? Is it to let go of control so I get the things I want? How do I not fall into the trap of wanting impossible things, like great health forever, or relying on external things for happiness?
Is it to let go of control and learn to be at peace with how things are? What if I learn to be at peace in an abusive or toxic situation?

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...

Just wanted to give a thank you to Mid, Arfie, Malibumark, Greeneyes, Mlro, Girlincalif, and Suncloudjd! You all always have such helpful tips and advice, but I always forget to write on my posts when I see you post, lol. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my body, lol. Thank you all so much! I'm starting to use my AI app as a sounding board again. I used to use it as that before...
I have a successful business of selling on ebay and amazon.
The universe is always looking to balance itself so wherever there is a perceived lack, the universe will fill in the gap. So if I want to sell a certain item, I will express that intent, and leave it up to the universe to find me a buyer and within 24-48 hours, it's sold. Sometimes quicker but rarely longer. I think about it for just a few seconds and then I go on to something else because if I think about it too long, my ego will get involved and when that happens, I can forget about getting my wish.
In acim, they call it the Holy Instant where our right mind is directly connected to God.... You can do the same thing through the practice of meditation.
In our dualistic world, we have two thought systems,....Our ego, which is the teacher of our wrong minded thought system....and the Holy spirit, or right mind which is connected to God, and is the teacher of our right minded thought system. Different spiritualities call it different things.
When you ask the universe for something and then worry about it or add resistance or belief that it won't happen the the universe picks up the negative vibration and doesn't act on it.
Another way to think about the law of attraction is like with people who always expect bad things to happen. The universe keeps sending them bad things because it thinks they like bad things since that's what their vibration is and it doesn't know the difference.
We live in a reflective universe and all of your successful people in this world will tell you that the way you reach your goals in this life is not so much through working hard but by "imagining it done!" The mind is very powerful and can be dangerous at times. so we really have to be careful what we think.
I don't know if I answered your question but I am happy to see a post about the law of attraction. If you have any other questions just ask.
God Bless.
I like the idea of getting whatever I want or need, but I'm afraid of several things. First off, that I become obsessed with getting it right. I can see myself beating myself for not thinking positively enough or having doubt. I can see myself getting into a cycle where I think, "oh my god, you have doubt! You can't have any doubt! Now it's never going to happen!" and getting a panic attack over that.
In some ways, I prefer the idea of accepting whatever the outcome is, and telling myself I can survive a negative outcome, instead of relying on the outcome being exactly what I want, because I can see myself blaming myself and beating myself up if my desired outcome doesn't happen.
How would you handle if your didn't sell your stuff within 24-48 hours? Does that mean you did it wrong? Is your fault? Does that mean it will never sell?
You wrote: "When you ask the universe for something and then worry about it or add resistance or belief that it won't happen the the universe picks up the negative vibration and doesn't act on it."
Does that mean if I have any doubt, I'm screwed? There's no hope? If that's the case, should I even try, because I'm always going to have some worry or some doubt.
The other question is, expecting other people to, say, buy we're selling or agree to take on my lease, how is that different from wanting to control other people behaviours? Isn't that us expecting other people to do what we want them to do? And isn't the 12 steps about letting go of wanting other people to do what we want them to do?
I think my main problem with Law of Attraction is that it will stir up my need to control things. I'll want to use it to make other people and the universe do my bidding, and when they don't, I'll beat myself up for not thinking correctly. I can myself falling down the rabbit hole of "I didn't vibrate correctly, now I will never be happy."
Law of Attraction may not be good for someone for like me lol.
I'm also wary of when people want to use Law of Attraction to cure illness and cancers. I can imagine someone saying to someone with cancer, "it's your fault. You should have thought better thoughts." Instead of just accepting that sometimes, illnesses happen.
Does Law of Attraction mean we don't accept that bad things can happen without it being our fault?
I'm not being snarky. I seriously would appreciate any answers to my questions. I actually do want to listen to more Law of Attraction teachings because I do like what they say about not striving or working against the current to get what you want. I'm just worried it can get into victim-blaming territory of "your pet got run over by a car and it's your fault because you doubted the universe", because I do believe that bad happens - it's part of life.
Keep in mind that anything that comes from fear, won't get you anything. These are things you mentioned that are fear based, " obsessed with getting it right. .... everything in your second and third paragraph, pretty much. It takes practice and you have to learn to forgive yourself if you don't get it right the first few times.
4th paragraph. Nope, I don't think about those things because in the rare case that it doesn't sell means there is something better coming down the road . Also, I can't be apprehensive about the future because the future is not here yet and the past is gone so all I really have control over is the present. Right here and right now. Thinking of a potential future event that may or may not take place is my ego trying to sabotage my thoughts. This is when you have to monitor your thoughts and be aware of ego tricks like that. The ego is not your friend. Your right mind is because your right mind is unconditional love just waiting for you to ask it for help..
If you find yourself analyzing a situation then that's your ego at work. Ego loves to analyze. Remember that the ego analyzes and the right mind accepts! Your right mind is your gateway to universal knowledge so don't be afraid to have a conversation with him. You can call the right mind God, or Jesus, or Holy Spirit or Higher Power....it doesn't matter as long as you don't call it your ego.
It only takes a few seconds to ask for what you want but start doing something else to take your mind off it and it will decrease your chances of sabotaging your request. YOu have to trust and you have to have Faith. A good way to learn trust is to ask the Holy Spirit for a sign. Ask in such a way that you will be 100% sure of where it came from. When I did that, I felt a touch on the back of my hand. Another time I did it, I felt an itch on my arm and another time it was on my head, on my temple. It's always different. They are very clever :)
Don't worry about what other people think. You can't control the thoughts of others..
The 12 steps is about taking control of our life, away from our ego ....which is what got us in trouble to begin with,.... and handing that control over to our Higher Power. who will find you a buyer who will be happy with their purchase. Another thing about the way the universe works is, it won't create a deficit in one to an advantage in another. It looks to make both sides happy because we are all the same in the eyes of God, as they say..
You don't need to do any thinking. Just tell the universe, "Here is my problem....show me another way!" and then follow your heart instead of your ego and everything will work out fine....
We all came into this world to learn different things so I never judge another person no matter who they are or what they did because I have no idea what motivated them to do the things they did. I have found that the key to having peace and serenity in my life is by not judging and practicing radical forgiveness of others including myself.... As long as we are human, we will make mistakes which is why forgiveness is so important... I have learned to accept myself the way I am.....an imperfect person in an imperfect world.
You seem to have alot of anxiety over using the law of attraction but once you see it working silently in your life and to your advantage then that anxiety will disappear because I use to be the same way. Meditation is a good way to calm yourself when you don't want your ego to get in the way. There are many good guided meditations on you tube.
You know what they say....you have nothing to fear but fear itself. I'll be happy to coach you every step of the way. It doesn't hurt, I promise :)
It also helps when you said that if the exact desire doesn’t happen, don’t worry because the universe has something better in store. That does take a lot of anxiety off the shoulder. I’m not even that worried of not getting what I want. I realized I can survive most things at this point and come out stronger. I’m more concerned about falling into my old habit of obsessing why things aren’t happening the way they’re supposed to and blaming myself for it.
And any coaching help would be much appreciated!!! I’m intrigued and inspired by the idea of Law of Attraction. Seems like a fun way to interact with the universe. It’s the fear of judging myself if I get it wrong that i’m worried about.
In thoughts of what I'd like, I do what I can, then let go of the outcome...not forcing my wants to the point of frustration or anxiety.
I do a clarifying exercise of writing down Everything I Want...then separating the most important, important and least important...giving myself a time line of 3 months for each section.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing expecting different results. I believe in God, and God helps those who help themselves. Re-framing yet not forcing an outcome that brings peace.
I do think the energy you give out effects the energy you get . I believe. You have to be grounded In yourself , have some self work done to understand the concept fully .If you’re completely stuck In Codependency I would not advise doing law of attraction work as a starting point .
I can see it in my own life in my severe codependency days I had poor emotional boundaries I was impatient and over reactive and taking on others feelings . Since i started becoming calmer communicating better having more emotional boundaries .
I hardly attract the Narcy, demanding energy vampires not saying they don’t exist but the energy I give out has changed and that’s changes the people I attract . It’s about becoming the best version of yourself .
One way to become more right minded is with the practice of meditation. Another way is to do the lessons of acim. It's a one year course and there is one lesson for every day of the year. I read somewhere that 70% of all students have some level of psychic ability. That has happened with me also. I had an experience about 3 years ago that I've been trying to replicate ever since. It was beautiful.
Like the others above me said, try something different and see if it resonates with you and if not, just try something else, that's all.
God Bless
Bob, Aaron does reference A Course in Miracles a lot and now you’ve mentioned it too. I’ll have to look that up! Probably later though. I think salina’s right that I still have work to do on myself.
I’m going back to look into stoic philosophy and Taoism again. I like how they teach accepting and being at peace with reality, though there are definitely changes in my life I want to make.
I think you hit the nail on the head Bob about being in the right mind. I think once I’m there I’ll get a clearer idea of what LoA and acim is really about. I will work on meditating and seeing if I could get into my right mind so I have the wisdom to know which changes to make and the courage to carry them out.
There is a clear channel name Tina Spalding who became a channel after doing the lessons in the Course so she channels Jesus who is said to be the original author of the Course and downloaded it though a lady named Helen Schucman who was a seer. It's a fascinating story which is very well documented thanks to Helen keeping notes of everything that went on in her life. The first teacher of the Course, Ken Wapnick wrote a book based on those notes called "Absence from Felicity which I highly recommend!
I went through the lessons a second time with Tina who would channel a commentary by Jesus after reading each lesson for the day. You can find them on you tube beginning with lesson 1 all the way to lesson 365..
highly recommend..,
In my opinion, it's the most important spiritual text since the Bible and even makes many corrections which the original writers of the Bible got wrong! When I began to hear my own teachers and guides speaking to me I thought, Whoa! There is alot more going on around us then what we can see and hear....we are never alone!...
God Bless
