Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. If you are on a journey towards self-love, this support group is for you. Join us and find others...

I know this is going to be a mean post, but I need to say it here-where it's anonymous and it can't get back.
I feel like my friend is a nutcase. There, I said it.
She is about ten years older than me, maybe that is part of the reason for the perceived incompatibility on my part. I met her through a really good friend of mine, who is compatible with me. She was my friend's friend and we hung out as a group. She has always been very difficult.
Now she is impossible.
With the natural fluctuation of time, and the stressors of Covid, and the fact that she had a stroke and has kidney disease now, things have really changed. I know this sounds awful and judgmental. She used to work and now is not. What I am saying here is that there are significant changes to her personality. I always had quite a hard time with her. She was always dominating, controlling, a tad narcissistic. I am much more laid back and could handle it. Since her health issues and her quitting work permanently, and the advent of Covid, she's a nightmare. I have always accommodated her, followed silently, been a good listener and flexible. This is my natual personality and it tends to draw people towards me, but sometimes the wrong people. When these tendencies go to far, the positives become codependency and being a spineless dormat-not a cool, chill laid back person.
I'm not willing to accommodate her to the extent she wants. We are both "triple vaxxed." Me, for my profession, and her, due to her health, are vaxxed to to the max! I followed Covid protocols-for a long time. I'm done now, variant be damned. I can't do this anymore. We've been friends all these years because we had the outdoors in common, and our common friends. She is, at core, a nice person. But to me she is really flawed. We generalliy are of the same political persuasion for the most part, and I still think she is too extreme, even though we're generally in the same camp there.
Lately, her demands are impossible: everyone who is in her social circle MUST be vaccinated to hang out with her. When we got in her car today-she told me to put on a mask, and we are both vaccinated! Jeeze! Yesterday, before we went to get together for an OUTDOOR walk in the part-she grilled me with questions: do you have symptoms, are you coughing, do you have a fever? I was so mad. I could see this last year in 2020, but now, really?
We used to go on road trips in the same car, but I REFUSE to mask up being fully vaxxed. Plus, I want to have a party with people of different types-different politicial ideas (as long as they are not too far out) people who are pro and anti-vax. I have a wide variety of acquaintances and friends of various persuasions. I'm open. I just feel like if she is present at a get-together, the whole thing is going to explode because she is so narrow. At times, she brings up the former president, which I get can be a concern, but I'm not obsessed with it. She wants to keep a 'full supply of medication" in case there is going to "be another Holocaust" like the 1940's. I honestly think she is totally out there. she "has to have her medication on hand...in case she has to leave with everything on her back...because there might be another Holocaust." (?????)
Hmmm, the news is saying another asteriod is coming to earth soon. I might want to dig a hole in the ground.
I don't want to go on any more road trips with her anymore. I felt like the last one was a nightmare. This was just a simple walk in the park. When some guy took our pics with her phone, she cleaned it and her hands off with sanitizer. If anyone comes into her realm, a couple feet in, she says, "Are you vaccinated?" This has caused fights. She calls the theater to complain because they don't do a good enough job enforcing masks. Plus, she walks like 15 feet in front of me when taking a walk. I actually said out loud, "Wow, it's like the Middle East!" (like women following men behind them). She said "What?" I didn't answer. I said, "nevermind."
In my opinion, she acts oblivious, no concept or awareness, like "Yeah, it's so rude to walk fifteen feet ahead of my friend, so arrogant." No clue.
I was watching the others on the bike path-seeing people of similar energy levels and pace, walking together, in sync, in tandem, in the flow-like with like-and then I'm thinking: "Wow, we are so dissimilar in energy and attitude-her up there, me back here, what a mismatch." What gets me is her utter lack of awareness.
Lastnight she was wailing and complaining, "I'm so old and no prospects!!! No one will date me!!! Waaaahhh!" She stated the reason we might be friends is that we are both single. Well if that's the case, that's not enough reason to be friends, there has to be a lot more in common than that. So what happens if I find another relationship-we don't have anything in common anymore?
I have to ask myself, "Why do I continue to do this?" Is it loneliness, or because my true friends are her cousin and the other women in the group?
My God!

It's been some time since my last post...sorry. I've been going through a challenging time with the sale of my home, purchase of a condo and my adult asperger son that lives with me. I've had days where I couldn't get out of bed, days where I stayed in my pj's and days where all I managed to do was eat, drink fluids and take care of my Sweet Mia kitty. Sweet Mia came to me from a shelter about...

If I come to DS and it won't do anything when I click "Login", I go to a post, click and then click "Leave a Reply". Then it will let me log in.Of course, sometimes DS just goes to "Error 504". Then I can't log in.

We teach others how to treat us by what we accept or don't accept of behaviors.
Since we can not change anyone but ourselves, guess you'll need to make a choice of you want to continue a more honest relationship, letting her know of the challenges you are feeling...or end the relationship.
Best To You~~
It sounds like your friend is in a emotional place of FEAR thinking, back and white and magical thinking. It is not fun to be around someone who is so negative. Most of my bookclub ladies were in fear thinking a year ago and one of them went on an intolerant rant about all the people she hates for months. I have called this woman the book club bully. I finally had to tell her that many were offended. I pointed out to her that it was hate filled speech (because she was going on an on about people she hated, people who were ruining her life, all with different ideologies than hers). Because this was a book club and she was ruining it, I kindly but bluntly spoke to her about it. So I totally get the mask wars issues and the domineering friends issue.
I will say some practical stuff that you can decide about. Now you know this friend of yours wants everyone masked in the car so its a no for any more car drives with her or you meet her at the location driving your own car. You know she is very very afraid and projecting her fear of death or the virus onto everyone and everything else. She sounds like perhaps she is a bully? So you get to tolerate that fear she has and her bullying, maybe even ask her about her fear so she can talk about it, OR - you can make it the hill the friendship dies on. You can tell her how you feel as the event happens, like say no I am not wearing a mask in the car and I'll drive myself or telling her she is being a bully to call the theater and make someone's day suck from her call.
And I want to say that the book club is now meeting in person again and the majority do not wear masks. These ladies were all convinced they would die early on, and now they are convinced they are teflon with the booster shots. No one said a dang word one way or the other at the last meeting and I was so grateful we didn't have a big fight over wearing or not wearing masks. I have friends and family that are not vaxed and reluctant to wear masks. I am vaxed and wear a mask but I also socialize with the unvaxed at times as we are in a waning period where I live after 4 rounds of bad. We did not socialize during the periods of high covid. I decided to be tolerant of other's opinions after the last time the book club bully created disharmony and offense and after a non-vaxed friend shared their family has cut them off. This stuff is simply not winnable and we divide ourselves at the time when we need to have human connections.
I do encourage you to perhaps limit contact with this woman and start to do new activities to make other friends. It is not as easy to make new friends in our older years as when we were in school around people all the time. Join some new social or hobby groups. When you are around other people, you will start to see with. more clarity whether or not this three person friendship group is sustainable. I'm looking at character now instead of agreement on political, social, or religious beliefs simply because of the bullying aspect. I ended two friendships outside of the book club for the bullying about covid or politics because I realized it boils down to a character issue when someone feels righteous in blaming, demeaning, hating, and labeling others as wrong, stupid, etc.
I do find myself sticking around too much for dysfunctional friends, who are always in the midst of some crisis of their own making. I think sometimes that it is a lot easier to focus on someone else, than work on my own issues. I also think I feel a little guilt, that if I were to distance myself or tell this person what I really think of them, it would hurt them. Usually, I hang in there until they do something so hurtful that I just snap and stop talking to them for while. I guess I need that, to release me from the guilt. It sounds like you are nearing the breaking point with this friend.
There is nothing wrong with distancing yourself from this person. Maybe start making plans with your friends and not always including her, or focus on a different friend group for a while.
