sorry as it seems so complicated to me to understand this stuff with spinal fusions...

Bill a spinal fusion is when they attach one disc to another by using some sort of metal device. For example there are 7 discs in the neck and 6 of mine are fused together which is why I have trouble turning or lifting my head up and down. There are also 7 discs in the back(lumbar area) and 5 of mine are fused together.
Now my thoracic ( rib cage area) is going and they just fused 3.
In other words I am a mess. Lol

Section 2:
I don't remember much about the day of surgery. I remember the dr coming in to visit and then being wheeled back. After that it is a blur. I do know that I was under anesthesia for over 8 hours. I also know that I bled a lot so they had to take it slowly. I was brought back to the recovery room and that is where I stayed all night since there was no room for me. A little child had surgery and screamed all night. It was def a nightmare.
I was brought to my room the day after surgery and I was in and out of it for most of the day. This is now Wednesday. I had the pain pump so I never had to ask for pain medicine. Definitely a plus. This hospital was huge. It seemed like there was a trauma alert every hour. It would be announced over the loudspeaker and would also tell you if it was an ambulance or helicopter. No sleep for the weary it seemed even with the pain pump.
Can't type anymore. I will be back as soon as I can.

Man you've been through the wringer. I hope you feel better soon. Are you at least out of the hospital already? Hospitals are terrible places to try and get any sleep. I'm praying for you for a full recovery! Hang in there. I'm glad you checked in and let us know what's going on. Hugs!

That must have been so scary getting that news before your surgery, I dont blame you for getting upset! I really hope, after going through so much, that it was a complete success and you get some sort of pain relief. Take care of yourself and take it easy. Regards Maddy

Eight hours of surgery is and and all those levels at one time and to hear he is buying you time for the thoracic is a lot to take in at once.

Wish there was a way you could use a speak app on phone or iPad. Still you have to read and I am sure that is just as difficult.

Thank you so much for letting us know as we all have been wondering about you. I am guessing you are in a neck brace of some sort. I can't imagine the pain of front and back of neck surgery. I have heard that surgery in the back of neck is more painful.

Yes my friend I am in a hard brace which is why it is so hard to type. Having a rough pain day today so I won't be on as much now. Maybe I will feel better later. I hope so.

some people can have a pain pump inserted all the time if its that bad.

well you are pretty FUSED up.

an occupational therapist can help you .. also.
get things put in place. ipad. or lap top .computer at a place wehre it is comfortable for you.
a nice chair.
LIMIT time you spend on computer every day.

rest in a nice firm chair. or lay on the bed in the correct position as PT has taught you I hope.

I hope you are being fed and watered.. sorry this was soo long.

I guess I am up to the day after surgery and beyond. The nurses were definitely understaffed, the food was terrible, and Thursday my breathing decided to take a dive. For some reason I couldn't get my O2 sat level up. It was really, really low. They immediately sent me for a cat scan of my lungs to see if there were any blood clots, then when I came back they put an oxygen mask on me instead of the nose plugs. I couldn't understand since I had no trouble breathing. They did an arterial blood gas test on me- ouch- which came back low as well. I believe the number was in the 70's. Now I understood. But I had no side effects. Odd. They said my body was compensating. But they really couldn't understand that with such a low number. Especially the doctor. He refused to discharge me without oxygen. They kept me an additional 4 days and I was finally discharged on Monday. In the meantime my SO had to make arrangements for the hospital bed, the oxygen and the shower chair. I left the hospital with a one hour trip ahead of me but really glad to be going home. Enough for now. I am tired. I will get back here soon. I am reading posts and hope to start my input soon.
