Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

Hi, I'm petal and I'm starting this discussion to find out if there are any other chronic pain sufferers who get the same flack from drs that I do. To begin with, my pain started about 8 years ago, in my ribs, and it gradually spread to my back, shoulders, neck and hips. No dr has ever given it a name so I'm left wondering what it is, fibro? arthritis? Anyway, at first my doc of 15 years refused to help me and said I would get addicted to pain killers. I was immobilized with pain and gained over 100lbs. I asked my dr for a breast reduction(I was a 42 I) and he refused and said lose weight. I found a new dr who had just moved into the small town I lived in. Over the months he helped me a lot. I got my breast reduction and he put me on codeine-contin and Emtec (codeine with acetaminophen). For about a year and a half I was doing much better and lost 70lbs because I could move around with less pain.
At the same time my life turned upside down, my hubby had cancer, we went bankrupt. He bought a new 5ton truck for work and he wasn't making $ just lots of mistakes from chemo brain. The Nov before last a huge tree (180' fir) smashed into our home and even though we had insurance we could not make ends meet and lost his truck, my van and our home of 18 years. We were robbed from our old home and at our rented home. All the stress triggered my ibs which had been in remission for 12 yrs.
I think my dr thought my pain and ibs were stress related but the pain started about 6 months after we adopted our sweet little boy. I was over the moon happy.
When I had to go to the hospital for ibs attacks, the dr and nurses all treated me like a drug-seeking addict. After moving to a larger area, the treatment at the hospital just got worse. In the meantime my dr moved away because of the serious drug addiction problem in this area and we adopted our son's biological baby sister who was born cocaine addicted.
Now I found another dr but she has reduced my meds nearly 50% and her colleague mistreats when she's away giving me 1/8 of my scrip for Emtec and changing all my meds without telling me.
I am terrified to have another ibs attack because the nurses tell me to shut up and the drs treat me like a drug-seeker. They send me home to ride out the episodes which can last for days.
I am afraid to tell my new dr that the decrease in meds is killing me. I've already gained 10lbs from immobility. They give me high doses of nsaids which irritate my ibs and continue to decrease my codeine.
I have no ideas about how to deal with this or how to find a better dr. I am becoming depressed but am already on Elevil and Paxil.
I know there are many chronic pain sufferers in here and I am positive we are all valid sufferers. What can I do about this? The drug problem in this area is profound and is at epidemic heights. I have 4 kids, one is handicapped and 2 are special needs adopted since birth. I eat natural food and have never used drugs except I used marijuana in my youth and also tried it for the ibs. It helped but the stress of using an illegal drug made it not worth it so I only use my scrips.
I am sick of being in horrible pain and I am angry at being treated like a drug-seeking addict whenever I see a dr. My new dr complained that I am on more meds than any other patient she has....is that my fault? I clearly did not prescribe them to myself. I told her I don't mind if she changes my meds and gets rid of the codeine as long as I can manage the pain and sleep at night. I wish I could find a better dr. My new dr referred me to a pain clinic last Nov and still no word from them. I am so angry at how I'm treated. What can I do??? sorry this is soo long. any input is appr4eciated, petal

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
as for the other things that have transpired, that is just awful, you have been thru so much,
it also shows you have a lot of strength even tho you may not feel it.
as for the meds, please tell the doc and be honest, you are sincere and honest,
let the doc know exactly what you are going thru, describe the pain, ie., the pain is so bad i want to just scream, i cant move, i cant sleep, its affecting.....this or that,
the doc has to know, there is no if's and's or butt's here.
how can u go on without decent meds?
it affects your home life, it affects you as far as a quality of life, you deserve better.
you are in my prayers,
good luck,
huggz:)
You poor thing. I thought Canada was top notch in medical care.
Personally, I think that your doctors are way out of line. And how the hell are you supposed to care of 4 kids when your doubled over with pain.
It doesn't even seem like you've had any GOOD drugs ever.
I wish there was something I could say or do,but I'm just not familiar with Canada. But there are lots of people on here who are from Canada and hopefull they can lead you in the right direction.
Many hugs and kisses to you. I hope you find what you need.

The most important thing I can say is .........keep looking until you find a doctor that is compatible to you. Contact the National Pain Association and ask them to suggest a doctor in your area.
Furthermore, contact your local mental health department. Yes, I said Mental Health. They can provide you with a case worker or a social worker to help you sort out you medical care and find the right team. I have one now, after years of confusing medical reports and doctors. I sure wish I had found her years ago. If they don't offer this service, local hospitals, or your state department of social services can lead you in the right directions.
Living with chronic pain day in and day out causes depression. You'd be nuts if you were not depressed. The mental and physical symptoms interact with each other. The mental makes the physical worse. And then, the physical inturn makes the mental depression worse. Any help for one, will only help but not elimanate the other. Also, getting help for depression will help you sort out and communicate your physcial symptoms more clearly with your medical doctor.
Your physical symptoms are not in your head, however the stress you are under makes the physical symptoms worse.
I hope this helps you. A few years ago I went through a similar situation and it seemed everything in my life crumbled at once.
Finally, reading and researching your illness helps get your stress under control. For me, it removes some of the fear of not knowing what was going on with my body.
And, most importantly, joining a support group is one of the best things you can do to help yourself. You've done that, congratulations, you never have to go threw that type of abuse alone anymore. Glad you found us, and welcome.
Oh, and I noticed and joined an advocacy group here on DS for pain. Haven't gotten into very much, just found it. But, it seems like a good group. If we are able I think we should all join something like that and do whatever we can, no matter how small.
i know you are angry, im lucky to have great docs but i also had to move out of state to get them. i used to be in an area where they refused to help me cause i was "too young". well i didnt ask for ra at the age of 3 so i had to move to an area that had docs that would help and were not hung up on age.
i hope you will get some help soon! im so sorry for all you have been thru.

Monday will be your day. Your day to be taken seriously about your pain and given the medication you need to keep your pain levels down. Just want to give you a big gentle cyber (((hug))) quietthyme
And remember, this isn't your fault!
One thing I have learned recently is that there are lots of people who can help- it's just a matter of being your own advocate, and trial and error. I switched pain docs after a few visits, I realized the first one just wasn't meant for me- don't get me wrong, he helps a lot of people- just not me!
I pray that you find some relief, and a doctor who will believe that you are not one of the many making up the epidemic in your town. Just a thought, but have you gone to another town, like the next one over? Sometimes that is what you must do in order to be able to trust your healthcare team!
Hope this helps a bit- best of luck to you!
