Just when I thought it was safe to turn on the tv again! That lady who did "Oxycontin Express" is now on another documentary on Current channel. This one is called "gateway to Heroin" and is more annoying than the 1st one. A guy breaks his back playing football, gets painkillers, abuses them (or so she says) and now does heroin. Where do they find these people?
Can they NOT find real pain patients? Or truly, would this poor guy NOT be a painkiller addict if his pain had been treated correctly?
I'm not saying he should be buying pills illegally or taking them in the wrong way, but you have to wonder if he'd been treated correctly for pain, maybe he wouldn't have become an addict.
So now they're saying Boston is the new Florida? I can't keep up with this crap. I see the abusers and get sick to my stomach. And as a needlephobe, it's NOT easy to watch.
What shocked me the most is how much people will pay on the streets for pain pills. That's one of the reasons the addicts turn to heroin.
Why doesn't this filmmaker even things out and deal with real pain patients? She has done 2 films now on addiction and yes, it happens and exists and it's sad and maddening. But what about people in REAL pain who can't GET their meds because of people who abuse drugs, like the people in this film?
Sorry, but it infuriates me both to SEE these addicts who cost real pain patients their lives, but also to KNOW the filmmaker is contributing to the problem by ignoring people who would never abuse drugs but who are dying a bit each day in pain.
Sorry- HAD to get that off my chest. I've been off for awhile, working a lot and taking care of my 3 year old and home. I have an appt. tomorrow so I usually stop in before those, and of course this movie was on just as I started reading threads.

Article said $5 opposed to $80 for oxy on street.
I believe the push of the article was that the redo of oxy was push addicts to heroin which is cut down and mixed with unknown chemicals and that there would be more deaths.
Did your reporter talk about that?

I haven't seen the new movie but I did watch about half of the oxycontin express. It made me so mad I couldn't keep watching it. I totally understand what you mean about it. She picks the addict because he's an addict not because he's a pain patient. The world needs to see what this is like from the point of view of a person with real chronic pain trying to fight the system to just get what they need - meds, insurance, support etc....

It is like creating a movie about how to build a bomb and then claiming it is not there fault that someone watched, built a bomb and blew up a building.
How it is OK in one case and not in the other????

I couldn't finish the 2nd movie b/c it had too many needles. I have my CP doc today and I SO freak when I think of needles being around, so watching people in that movie made me nauseous.
I know- I'm a wimp. But it's my biggest fear in life. (That, and dentists.) It also made me VRY angry seeing them nod out from misusing meds and heroin. I've always thought I was a compassionate woman, but I was MAD. Those people are keeping real patients from getting help. I GET they have a disease and it's horrible and all, but I STILL was angry.
Okay, now I'm off to drive in 102 degree heat in MI of all places, to go see my CP doc. I am having terrible sinusitis and JUST got over a 3 MONTH sinus infection, so it makes it even harder as my ears are clogged and I'm blowing my nose every 5 minutes. But I'd rather blow it than have it swollen shut. I felt like I was going to die- so claustraphobic. Damn, I'm getting phobic in my semi-old age!

When I lived in Fla, a doctor in town was arrested and convicted of writing a HUGE amt. of scripts for pain meds. You could just walk in, and say you have a headache, and she'd give you a script for 200 80mg Oxy's with another 300 Oxycodones for breakthrough pain. And then when she was sent to prison, there were hundreds of people looking for more meds on the street, or the smart ones going to detox.
The world would be a better place when those of us with REAL pain would have access to pain meds, and those abusers would go away.
I also had a "friend" at work who stole the ER docs' prescription pads and got tons of OxyContin. She was arrested and prosecuted. I can't believe she actually held my son when he was born, and attended my Batchelorette party. Seeing her mugshot on the news was a little too much for me.
You're right, by the way. It's scary to watch TV anymore. What will be next?
