Pain manag. won't give me an appoint. without MRI?
Hello everyone! My question today is about making an appointment with pain management. I use to go to a pain clinic around 10 years ago for my Fibromyalgia. Since then I have a whole lot more disorders and diseases such as Diabetes, Carpal tunnel, arthritis in my spine and moderate degenerative disc disease to mane a few. I am in so much pain in my back I can barely move. And it's like this almost all the time. I finally got my Primary Dr. to send me to a pain specialist along with physical therapy. So I call to make an appointment and the lady on the phone tells me that she can't make me an appointment until I have had a MRI or CT scan. I do have an x-ray but she said that isn't good enough. Along with that she needs 3 months of my primary Dr's records. Well, the problem is in order for me to have an MRI done I have to have at least 3 months of physical therapy done first and I have to say that it didn't work for me. This is so my insurance will pay for it. So, I know that I have to wait at least another 3 months before I can get any relief. More like 4 months actually because you know you can never get in there right away. How come 10 years ago or so I didn't need anything but a referral from my Dr.? And all I want is some cortizone injections in my knees and back. I think that is what it's called. I use to get them in my knees. I don't want pain meds. But that is beside the point. So what do people do that have things like Fibro? As we all know who have this here there is no "proof" with MRI's and stuff. So, they can just turn us down now? What happened to the pain laws? I can't get someone else because I have state insurance or whatever and you have to go by there rules and they assign you a certain Dr. to go to if you like it or not. Is this how it is now? Or did I just happen to get unlucky with this particular pain clinic and insurance group? I also put this in the Fibro forum.

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

When I got tired of the run around going from doctor to specialist to the hospital for tests and back to the doctor and specialist and then to the physical therapist and on and on.again,...... I decided to research alternative therapies. I found some that actually worked and I still use them today, like tens machines, meditation, biofeedback, and supplements.
I googled some to see if there was anything you might like to try.

If all you're looking for are Coritisone Injections then your M.D. can refer you to and Orthopedic Dr. for that. You don't have to go to a Pain Mgmt. Specialist. But they also will want X-rays at the bare minimum and will probably do tests before they just give you injections. And they won't be willing to hand out Narcotics.
Pain Management has changed a lot in the last 5 years.
care organization your Medicaid is with? Diagnostic test results from 10 years ago is too long.
Medicaid has changed drastically in recent years. I remember when a doctor's referral was all that was required to see a Medicaid specialist. But many, many more people receive Medicaid now. Medicaid is welfare. Taxpayers pay for the medical care Medicaid recepients receive. In other words the money has to be spent on many more people. State Medicaid budgets are far, far less than is needed. The reimbursement rates for Medicaid providers are ridiculously little. That is one reason so few providers except Medicaid only.
In Louisiana, Medicaid will not pay for a pain management doctor for chronic pain. There are no exceptions. So things could be worse.
You can try and find out what it will cost to get an MRI if you paid cash and see if the facility has a payment plan. I believe you can get an MRI for around 300$.
