I used to work at a bookstore when I was 1st diagnosed with RSD and I was a supervisor. I started missing work b/c it was too much for me and they were stumped as to how a perfect employee could just disappear. We talked and they made an arrangement for me to do exactly what you'll be doing, and darned if it didn't HELP!
Now I don't know your schedule for sure, but IF it is giving you 2 days off, you might want to just TRY it. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. But if they're talking increasing your hours, then I totally get it.
I've stayed working for 15 years but THAT bookstore job was one I eventually had to quit. All the lifting and shelving was too much. Still, when they rearranged my hours, it worked for a good year or so.
I hope your body can handle the change. If I'm not getting it right I apologize- it just sounds like you'll be getting 2 days off instead of working 5 5 hour days.
I used to take my meds at work- it was no big deal as I didn't handle any machinery or do anything that endangered anyone. Sometimes the only way a CPer CAN work is to take their meds at work!
Good Luck to you and I sure hope it works out the way you want it to. Working with CP is not easy- and you do what you have to do to stay okay. :)
I spoke the clinic mgr today and she said can you get a docs note, I said yes, but my mgr said it wouldnt matter that they couldnt accommadate me, she said they should have never said that with out checking with occ health! Heres my issue, do I want occ health knowing my business? they dont know I take meds and I really dont want them to.
I think I will just try it, they said they wont schedule me 3 in a row, and I have a hr lunch to rest.
I'm not suggesting a lawsuit, perhaps just something worth looking into??
you have to actually be declared disabled under ssdi or be disabled in a way that would cause other people to perceive you as disabled, in your job, and unable to be accommodated for without causing an undue hardship to the employer to qualify for protection under ADA law.
that means that if the workplace is already an equal op. employer and fully equipped within ADA guidelines for all public buildings as far as accessibility is concerned, little things, such as not being able to meet scheduling requirements can be perceived by employers as an "undue hardship" in right to work states. additionally and unfortunately often, disclosing a disability or demanding special treatment from employers with medical claims such as a doctor's notes can often be an uncomfortable and unrealistic hardship on management's scheduling and wiggle room. it may create a hostile environment from fellow employees or employers and may lead to termination of employment.
this termination is usually lawful except in cases of on the job injuries or worker's compensation benefits.
it's not fair and it totally sucks, but it's the law.
the money to fight something like this would put a lot of us in our graves and still in hock. it's heavy, but a basic knowledge of the law is really important for those of us who have chronic pain and can work.
with care,
jen
I made the mistake of thinking such help was available elsewhere...
my bad:(
It is also my understanding that if your employer has been providing you with accomodations ... They must provide you with a notice that they can no longer provide those same accomodations and, allow for the provision of different ones in order for you to continue in your employment.
I don't know all the ins and outs of your jobs but, I would definately seek out an attorney, one who has some experience with ADA / employment ---it sounds like they are trying to get rid of you my friend.
HUGS to you!
Reasonable accomodation is a FEDERAL law!!! The state may have some law that makes the course of action important. But the federal gov passed this law so people could have a chance to work and not end up on the welfare rolls. I know I'd love to be able to work again!
There is something wrong with a society that forces people out of jobs because of handicapps that require minor accomodations.
I know that for me, it's easier to work longer days but fewer days a week. Work basically ruins my day anyway, so for me it's better to have more time off to recuperate.
If you're on your feet all day, maybe you could ask to use a stool to make the longer shift less tiring? Maybe you could talk to your doctor about upping your pain meds just a little for the days you have to work, but then you could go back down to your regular dosage on the days that you aren't working?
Should i get a DR.'s NOTE for work??
