This seems like a "try it, you might like it" situation. If the shift doesn't cause a significant downgrade in your ability to recover or physical abilities, it might just work out fine. If the pain is just too much, then I'd look into your state laws regarding reasonable accommodation and talk to your doctor.
I understand not necessarily wanting people at work to know your business or personal health, but you may want to talk to HR/occupational health if the switch isn't workable for you. They would need documentation of your disability.
