Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

Hi there,
I'm a new member, and just wanted to introduce myself. You can call me "Boo"..everyone does!!
I have spinal stenosis, severe arthritis in my back, knees and hips. My Dr's tell me that my left knee is bone on bone, and my left hip is bone on bone. I'm 51 yrs old, and live in Upstate NY.
I started out being diagnosed with knee issues, going back to 13 years old. Had dislocation of the knee caps, and had surgery on one of my knees at age 13. The other knee I never had surgery on.
Then 5 years ago, I had back surgery, after being diagnosed about 8 years ago with Spinal Stenosis. My pain had increased quickly, and I was partially disabled prior to surgery, due to pain, and trouble walking or standing more than 10 minutes. I had a double fusion, have rods and pins, and had a decompression of the sciatic.
The bone grew, as it was supposed to from the surgery, but my pain did not go away. I am extremely overweight, so I am also now, in the process of scheduling my gastric bypass surgery in the next month, to help relieve the pain, and to get as healthy as possible. Hoping to rid of this pain with the weight loss, as least some of it.
Right now, my left hip is so bad, I can barely walk without my cane or walker. My Hip Dr said, once I lose ALL THE WEIGHT, he would do a hip replacement, even though I am only 51 yrs old. But I have to lose quite a bit of weight, before he would do it.
Hope everyone is having a good week so far, it's early in the week, so we still have time to enjoy! I try to get out, and not stay home in bed due to pain, as I know keeping active is better for me, but some days it's so hard.
Glad to be here!!!!

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmonĀ

check out that smoke ring. It tasted really good. I smothered it with Maulls BBQ sauce which is Local to St. Louis and one of the best I ever had.....

Welcome to the group Boo. Sorry you have to be here because that means your in pain, but you'll meet some great people with similar pain problems who can relate, commiserate, laugh with you or just send you a hug if that's what you need. Plus you'll get some great information from some who might have gone thru what you're about to.
My name is Mary Ellen, i'm 52, live in Boston, and like you have Severe Back problems from stenosis, discs, nerve damage, failed back syndrome is what they call mine now.
I'VEHad numerous back and neck surgeries which made me worse in most cases. Have pain and numbness going down both legs, in hips, in hands , get awful migraines from the cervical part, but have had a pain pump put in which helps somewhat, but basically have pain every day. Some days better, some worse.
I understand the bone on bone thing, my discs are all gone and the pain in the sciatica can bring me to my knees fast, but I try to excercise every day. I do an Elliptical, because like you, i can't do the walking without a cane and not for long but the Elliptical doesn't hurt and actually loosens up my hips which are always tight. I do pilates and basic ballet stretches as well as this is the only reason i stand up anymore.
Good luck with your by-pass surgery. I lost over 100 lbs. over 12 years ago and it definitely helps the back and hip pain. I'll say a prayer that everything goes smoothly for you.
well, i've gone on way too long, but welcome to this wonderful group. I'm hope to get to know you better.
hugs,

Take care and Good Luck with your upcoming surgery.
Hope you get that weight off very soon. I had a friend who needed such and when she lost weight her knees improved a lot. It will be worth it.
Good luck
Sunny
I'm going to be honest here.. I'm having a hard time coming into your post. Let me start off by saying.. I need two knee replacements and the bones and rubbing bone on bone. My doctor won't do them until I also lose more weight. I also have polyneuropathy, fibro, seizures and arthritis and something else my neurologist can't find he says.
Anyhow when I got sick 5 years ago I was a very large woman but very active. Then one day I went to stand up from a bench in my flower bed and could barely walk. To make a long story short my regular doctor went away and his case load went to this new doctor. She blamed my pain and walking problems on my weight. I knew it wasn't. I went from having trouble walking to a wheelchair within weeks. She even went as far as to force me into having the lap band done as to taking away the morphine my former regular doctor prescribed taken off me until I agreed to have the lap band done. I told her I wasn't having the lap band done I was already losing weight on my own. She told me it was medically impossible to lose the weight I need to lose. Needless to say I went into a depression and in the wheelchair I put on even more weight. I wound up getting up to 550lbs. I was always a big person even when I was younger but that was out of control.
So over the past year and a half or so from a wheelchair with basically no exercise I lost over 200lbs Boo. I'm down to 334lbs. I don't want you to feel like you have to do it cause doctors say you have to. Cause you do have a choice. And you can really do it on your own. And I still eat cake and drink Pepsi. I just eat very tiny potions. I found out the key to dieting isn't about doing without it's about having some of everything just having really small bites of it.
I'm not telling you not to have the bypass... I'm just telling you don't let anyone ever make you feel you can't do it on your own or give you a chance to try on your own. Or like it's impossible. Cause I'm living proof it isn't .
I wish you the best in whatever you do. And I'd love to become friends and support you through this every step of the way if you allow me. To vent/ talk whatever.
Best wishes,
Paula
Hugs & God Bless
