There is a person at work with whom I have had more than one heated disagreement (as in I cussed him out at the top of my voice in the office, in front of other people). For many months I could not think of his name without cussing. Even our GM tried to broker peace between us and we were just not having it, we were just too different in our approaches.
In the past year or so he has come under a lot of fire, and my team has been brought in to help solve some of his problems, which I can readily list. But over time the dynamic changed. For one thing I don't like to see anyone get beaten up. So in the face of the constant pounding he was taking I started to defend him. This led to a few pleasant conversations and a steady improvement in our relationship.
I had to attend a training session coordinated by this person. On day one when I walked in , he immediately replaced my hard iron chair with a padded one. On day 2 when I drove into the parking lot I was immediately ushered to a reserved spot right beside the building.
I am SO GRATEFUL to this guy for his consideration. I am happy that I have stood up for him, because by changing my behavior I have influenced the way he treats me.
Important life lesson. The only person you can change in this world is YOU. My DS friends I know you come into contact day-to-day with people who are callous, inconsiderate, insensitive .... Please don't frustrate yourself by trying to change them. Perhaps if you are kinder to them, they just may turn around and be the one looking out for you.

And I confess, on rare occasions I've let someone have it (verbally) and felt better. I have to be pushed pretty hard for that.
