Mom wanted to do all the cooking and shopping herself and refused Meals on Wheels. Everytime I went over there, no food and she kept telling the dr "I eat alot". I got sick and couldnot help bring groceries or take her out to eat. Was like that for a month. Afterwards I visited less often b/c I was sick. I went over to take her to the dr. (before I visited I got the meals on wheels info on line ) and spoke to her dr about this idea. He agreed and told me to give them his number and he would speak to them if they had any questions Afterwards we " walked by"Community House (social workers for the elderly) and gave info for the Meals on wheels .(I didn't tell her what I was going to apply for it. I needed to stop by to do something) Ii didn't care if she complained and was telling the social worker " I eat I cook, etc etc..". I just stood behind my mother and faced the social worker and shook my head no. i told them to call me. They called me I explained the situation and told them they could call her Dr. if there was a problem. I got her meals on wheels. I think she was afraid of new things and how it would work out, so I told her they are coming, After a month, if your don't like it then I will cancel it. but once they came she was happy with it.
Even ate the fish, which she hates. LOL
I had made a decision which was the best for her, since I knew I could not be there for her all the time and she was losing so much weight b/c she was not really shopping or cooking for herself. I knew it would be stressful to go against her decision but the alternative of her becoming sick from malnutrition was worse and injurying herself from falling or getting unconscious, so I chose the lesser of 2 evils.
If you are the person accompanying her to the dr, ask him if it possible to help get your mom assistance. MY MOM's DR. was on board with helping her get the assistance she needed, even over her objections. She might take things better if it came from medical professionals, home health aide. And once the home health aide comes she might listen to them to wear her sling. Try could be better than it is now.
