Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.

Aloha. Just came back from taking mom to her counseling appt.
She's recently been talking about wanting to go on a "goodbye tour" around the country (make her peace with family members) because she feels like she's dying. She's talked like this a few years ago and I just chalked it up to the move and her having difficulty with adjusting (you know, catastrophizing). But she's been talking like this again lately so I asked her to please mention it to her counselor. She said she would. Well, that was a month ago that I brought it up to her. So I checked in with her this morning and she said she hasn't yet mentioned it, she's only been talking about her new diet. *facepalm* Mom likes to only talk positive with docs and counselors.
Yeah, OK.. I wiped my plans for the day and took her. I tried to push her to say something to the lady, but seriously, she spent the whole hour just beating around the bush. Finally 5 mins left in the session when she sorta vaguely mumbled something about it. The whole appointment she was just ranting and raving about her IBS, blood pressure, and new diet. She totally missed the main point that even though she "feels" like she's dying, she's trying to buy tickets to fly all over the mainland US as well as go on a cross country road trip to help my youngest brother (who just moved) unpack. While mom has a HERNIA. Yeah, because THAT'S perfectly logical. Did I mention my mom is extremely impulsive? She completely acts on (swinging) emotions without any rational thinking or judgement and flips out at any person who tries to reason with her.
She got angry with me this morning (even told me to drop it) when I told her I do not approve of this and I'm upset with her. I told her I have every reason to be upset because of her past of impulsive decisions based on pure emotion without taking a chance to sit down and think of any pros & cons to the consequences of those actions. AND as a result her ending up in some deep doo-doo that we the family have had to rescue her out of. For example 1.her going broke and getting stuck somewhere strange. 2. Her getting injured. 3. Her getting into trouble in some strange place and accepting help from a stranger who is a bad person (even worse staying / moving in with that bad person). ALL of these scenarios have happened multiple times in the past.
Anyway.. thanks for letting me come here and post again. I hope you don't get sick of me. I may be posting here a lot. LOL. PLease share your thoughts. Mahalo.

Well, our drought isn't broken but our gutter is. Got two big storms rigth after each other and, wait for it, a tornado warning. Now, I was already running for my go-bag when I heard thunder. The air felt wrong. The sky was getting a color to the west. Been there, lived that, time to hide.No funnel touched down but the radar indicated rotation, and boy was it visible from the ground. Different...

Welcome to the Perseid meteor showers, the "biggies" usually every year. (The Leonids beat 'em one year IMHO).AND today much of the northern hemisphere will see 5 to 99% solar eclipse. How cool is that? Your best bet is to be in the UK or norhtern Spain, where totality is excellent before sundown. Me, I'll get a super duper tiny itty bitty slice of it, so little that it won't be noticeable. New...

If she wanders off in a dangerous way, and if she has a cell phone, you may be able to set it up with a tracking program that will let you know where she is.
You mention a youngest brother, suggesting that you have at least 2 brothers. What do they think about your mom? While it should not fall on you (the daughter) to do everything, it often falls on one child to do almost everything. The trick is to keep your siblings involved and informed about what is going on.
