Mom comes home in 10 days

The rehab my mom is at is discharging her in 10 days. I was absolutely shocked to hear it. She still hasn't gotten over her fear of falling and she hasn't made much progress in her physical therapy. They still haven't had her get used to going up and down the stairs again. They are under the impression that the office of aging would be able to help me by providing help, but the office of aging said it would be months before anything happens, if we even qualify for help.

I have such mixed feelings. On one hand it will be good to have her home and before Thanksgiving, but on the other hand I just feel totally unprepared for this. Where is she going to sleep if she can't get up the steps? Will she even be able to get up the steps to get into the house? What happens if she is too scared to get up for a fear of falling? Will she even be able to get out of the car? I wish things would go back to normal, but I am afraid this is not going to work out well.

Well what is "normal" anyway? Maybe just make her a nice little "nest" on the first floor with nice blankets and pillows on the sofa?

You won't know till the time comes and you'll have to take each day as it comes. Go slow! Don't push and just see what happens.

Try not to worry so much before she comes home.

My mom can't wait to come home. She thinks it will be like nothing ever happened and even believes she can cook Thanksgiving dinner. She is too afraid to stand for more than a few seconds so I don't know how she plans to do that!

Cooking might be your ticket to getting her turned around! Be ready with all sorts of tasks she can do to help cook; some that can be done sitting, some standing, etc.

That sounds like a good idea. Maybe she needs something to get her mind off of it. I hope she can overcome this fear!

Oh gosh! Good luck! My Mom wanted to cook a pot roast when she could not longer see or hear!

HAD to put the brakes on that idea!

I let her help with the cooking as long as was possible before she started cutting her fingers and spitting in the food.

One day when she insisted on making a roast I told her, Ok. Go ahead

And of course she realized that was not going to happen.

it is hard to imagine how you will handle things but i agree, take it a day at a time, and helping with tasks in the kitchen is a great idea. peeling potatoes sitting and such. she will feel great helping. keep posting as i am sure you will need support through this adjustment time.

Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway.
