Caring For Aging Parents Support Group
Caring for aging parents can be a difficul time as we become the caretakers for our parents. This broad responsibility can encompass such services as assisted living, adult day care, long term care, nursing homes, hospice care, and in-home care. Whether you have just started caring for your parents or just need a place to talk, we're here.

I am soooooo sorry for those poor kids (and their mom)......and it certainly doesn't sound like your mother is gonna give an inch:(:(
Time for a change............sad to sad...............JMHO!!!!!!!!!!
She is an adult. May be time to tell her to find a place where she will be happier.
She already promised not to tell the kids and did so. There comes a time when we have the right to accept that someone will behave badly to control things by lying.
You don't have to keep a liar around to mess up everyone's life.
Deb, if I had two of them in the house, you'd have to put me in a padded cell! She moved in with us because we have a big house and we were always together anyway. She was always at my house staying over. She grew tired of living in her condo so we invited her to move in with us. Since she's moved in, it's steadily gotten worse. Constant disparaging remarks towards my husband, me and my family. Constant tantrums where if we're not doing exactly what she wants, she retreats to her room; lies on her bed for a day or two not eating or drinking. All manipulation techniques. I'm constantly apologizing for something I never did and then have to hand hold her to eat and come out and talk to us again. She doesn't like our families or friends visiting, she just wants it to be the three of us; doing whatever she feels like doing. I never saw this side of her before she moved in with me. We have many friends and family members that don't stop by anymore because of her indifference to them when they visit.
Sunny, it is an awful thing that my daughter and children have had to go through. It's very common knowledge, especially my mother's knowledge of how the grandkids react to a hospital or doctors at a hospital. They absolutely panic and yes they have been in therapy over their father's death to help them come to terms with it.
It turned out that my daughter had a large kidney stone that she couldn't pass so she had to spend the night at the hospital; there was a procedure that they had to do to break down the stone and get it moving. Sunday, my daughter was in so, so shape, a little lethargic but still came over to have dinner with us. Turns out when my mother got her alone, she asked my daughter what her crisis was all about and gave her some derogatory comments about always having a problem. Absolutely not true!
My husband and I are talking about selling the house, getting her back into a condo and moving on. My brother and sister, oh boy, (they don't want her living with them; one's in WI, others in CA) but are furious with me and hubby for even thinking of moving her out.
Must be nice to live hundreds and thousands of miles away; have your peaceful lives and dictate what you don't want in your life but expect the other sibling to just handle.
Thanks for the input, I'm going to check out Trojan's older posts.
Everyone have a great day...

I don't understand things like using all the hot water for a shower
Parking blocking the driveway which is illegal
Digging up my plants and tossing them

It sounds like it's time to talk, calmly, and just say some thing like, "This isn't working out. We need to find other arrangements." And when she has her little fit, "This isn't working out. We need to find other arrangements."
I live hundreds of miles from my parents (our parents aren't the reason my husband and I moved but I think we would have stayed if we'd had loving and supportive parents) and I have spent almost 6 of the last 8 weeks near my parents. First my dad was in the hospital, then my mom and they are in a rehab facility but need to go to a nursing home. Last week I told my mom I was trying to figure out when it would be a good time for me to go home. "Never! You should move back here." I KNOW I should have said, "Well, that's not an option so I'm trying to figure out when I should go home." But, I tried to start giving reasons why that's not an option. She KNOWS the reasons, she doesn't care, life is supposed to be about what she wants.
All of that to say that sometimes you jsut have to calmly repeat things and let the bully know you won't stand for their bullying anymore.
And on that note, time to go visit my parents at rehab then have lunch with my inlaws who alway conveniently forget that I don't like pork. :D
I think I need to take a walk out into the woods for a good primal scream! That should do it......
OH GOSH, as I'm typing this I'm seeing; I'm living in hell; this must be it!
But given that, you might want to take control of things you can control (you) and factor other things (your mom's actions) out of the equation.
Be upfront with your grand kids, let them know that their great grandma often says hurtful things, or gets confused and says things that are not true. This may sound like it is poisoning them against your mom, but the reality is that you are protecting them FROM your mom.
I guess reasonable people try to explain their decisions when we know that the decision is not what the other person wants. But when we get unreasonable reactions, it is time to change our tune and simply announce our decision. Manipulative people love to pound away at the reasons we give, their goal is to undermine the reasons and then make you feel obligated to change your decision. Hence the change to giving your decision without reasons.
I am so sorry that you are having trouble with your mom. Sounds like you need a serious talk with your brother and sister; they need to understand how their mom is treating you.
I need to take a step back for another day or so before I say something to her that I'll regret. I want to be strong and firm but not hurtful, although I'd like to be.
I've spoken to both my brother and sister many times either on the phone or when they've visited. They both listen and feel bad but neither of them feel they could take her on in their lives. It's to the point now that they don't call me anymore. I think they're afraid that I might want to push the issue further.
I usually always calm down after a day or so but it's different this time; I don't scare children and I'm never verbally or emotionally cruel to them either. I have absolutely no respect for any person who is.
I almost never post out here; I always thought everyone here has just as many problems as I and do not need my problems added.
It was nice to get the feedback from everyone. I was feeling pretty poorly.
And some ppl will not understand. But Im living proof it can be done!
it used to be even though I loved my mom I could not be around her for very long before the s^&t hit the fan.
Now she lives with me. We cook and clean together. Go to lunch. Have friends over, you name it!
Remember its no fun for the abuser to live that way either!!!! My parents are both so much happier now, and obviously hubby and I too!
My problem right now though is that I can't even look at her. I have nothing that I really want to work out. I just want her away from me, living with my brother or sister. And, I would be in absolute heaven when the day came that one of them are calling me because she's driving them crazy.....
I should call them;;;;;; TAG, your it, your turn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dont put it off b ecause it takes a lot of time. Its an every day new way of interacting and the sooner you get started the sooner you will see improvement.
Good luck!
A Jamaican friend of mine tells me they have a saying there: you are a man once and a child twice. Sounds like your mom is reverting to that second childhood, and is in the terrible teenage years where they are right, everybody else is wrong, and the universe revolves around them.
Perhaps if you look at this person not as your mother, but an unfortunate shell of her former self.
She's very intelligent, keeps her own records and can do a cross word puzzle with a pen.... So, she's not lacking in the brain pan. She has a nasty mean streak! There's no dementia in my family, she sees her doctor regularly; physically, she only has high blood pressure at this time.
I think her personality is just like her mothers. Not getting her way means she will bully, lash out and then silent treatment! pppppfffffff
