I was just wondering if any of those dealing with chronic, debilitating pain have heard of or spoken with a pain management doctor about the possibility of a pain pump. My husband has spastic paralysis and just had a baclofen pump implanted in his abdomen with a catheter that administers baclofen into the spinal fluid. This medication is to reduce the spasticity in his legs; however, when I was waiting for his surgery to be done, there was also someone waiting who had her husband getting a pump implanted to dispense pain medication into the spinal fluid.

My hubby was on the maximum dose of the medication he could take my mouth; what goes into the spinal fluid is an extremely small amount but it has the same effect since it does not have to go through the GI tract.

I also had pretty severe chronic low back pain. I had herniated several discs and had several bulging after lifting the leg of a 600 pound patient I was caring for. I went through all the usual treatments including epidurals, anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy. While going to the workers comp doctors they would not allow me to go to a chiropractor. After my case was settled I began to go to a chiropractor with wonderful results. I take care of my husband who has a chronic condition, and I also care for my mother who has cancer. I can tell you one is not any easier than the other. They both have anger, they both have pain, sadness, depression, and some days happiness. When my husband was in the hospital a few months back, he was so depressed he would not talk to me at all, he wanted to lay in the dark all day and all night. I let him do that for a few days, then I decided I am not going to give him an option to give up. So the very next day I walked into his hospital room, flipped on the light, open the blinds, and we fought. I then told him, I have an investment here, I am the one who gives you a bath, cleans your vomit, cleans your drainage bulbs, and sits with you. You have no right to quit and give up on me or your son. I told him he has to fight! It was a little easier on us because our son was 17, however he still has a hard time with things, because dad can't do what he had been able to to before. He is able to understand more than the littler kids. Just remember, there is always hope, and tomorrow may be a harder day, but as long as you have each other then smile and you will find the peace.
