I know for a fact I don't want to throw his photos or cards out. Why? Because although he hurt me a lot in the last two and a half years, he also made me the happiest woman in the world in the 11 years prior to that, so all the cards and photos from that time are truthful, we were in love, he cared for me, he treated me well, it just did not last forever. They are all happy memories and in those photos I feel he is (in a way) a different man from the one he became. He was a man I loved and respected, who was proud of me, was gentle and truthful. The more recent pictures are a different matter, in them I see him as the face of deceit. I won't get rid of those either, they're for my daughter.
It is definitely a personal choice, it depends how you feel about the photos and about him.
My mother & father divorced when I was just under 3 years old & no photos made it. I have no idea what my father looked like, if there were any photos of me & him together, what our houses looked like, nothing. I don't desire a relationship with him at all but I still really wish I did have some pictures from that time. I's sure my children will someday too.
Stronggal said "If they want to know about their roots they can get that info from me and their father." While this is true what if something ever happened to you? Who's to say that your ex would care to share any info, unbiased info, or even true info?
I think photos are really important & they need to be kept for future generations. You don't have to look at them or think about them ever again. Just box them up & give them to your kids when they are old enough to know what they want to do with them.
Right now I have stored them away. I don't want to see them. I am saving them for my stepdaughter. If she wants them, that's fine. If not, maybe one day I'll toss them.
I think each person has to do what is right for him/her.
