Think hard about what you give away is all I have to say.
I literally came out of the hurricane with my most precious belongings. About 4 days later, when the Red Cross made it in, I was able to leave work and go take a look at my house. I had to take an ax to my dresser to get the clothes out and took them all out of my closet. I knew clothes weren't going to be easy to come by, and I didn't want to live on the three pairs of panties I had brought with me. I only had one pair of shoes. I found a pair of shoes in the mud that weren't mine, and I took them. I didn't want to dirty my only pair. I loved those flip flops until they broke a year later. I took a picture for prosperity.
About 6 months after I started living in my FEMA trailer, I started over. Bought a 50 year old 800 square foot house. My mom gave me a couch and love seat and table with four chairs. My dad gave me a headboard and dresser. The salvation army bought me a mattress and gave me a tub of cleaning supplies as well as a mop and broom. The SeaBees (Navy) gave me a bed in a bag set as well as a small set of kitchen supplies. A friend gave me an old washer and dryer that was in their garage that they had planned on throwing out because they got a new one. It is still kicking 4 nearly four years later.
Believe it or not, four years later, I am still living with the same things. There is very little I bought since then. Mostly just some curtains to give me more privacy than the blinds that came in my house and a few throw rugs. I also had to buy a new laptop, but I didn't buy a new tv or electronics. My life has a quarter of the stuff I had before, and I am in a much better place. People think I am nuts sometimes, but that is ok :)
