Mary's blindness wasn't genetic. Scarlet fever, right?

Yep...Mary got scarlet fever. And she never married (in real life anyway.)

Laura's house burned down and she lost her only son in that fire. Then her husband got sick with something (measles??) and was crippled the rest of his life. Laura did have a real daughter named Rose and she wrote the Little House stories in her later years.

Oh and Carrie never recovered completely from the winter they almost starved and froze to death.

They had a terribly hard life, but loved each other to pieces. (The books are so much better than the tv series!!)

I love my family although we have few bad apples and some diseases, but not bad. I appreciate the good side,it could have been worst.
Genetic predisposition does not mean you will get the disease, if you work hard to take care of yourself.

Oh course Nova, we all share the same husband. LOL

I have a large family and we have one of everything. I wouldn't trade a single one of them. It does take patience though!

I don't know my biological family - I was adopted. I do know the likelihood that my rheumatoid arthritis came down from my genetic family. But, my adoptive family was a kick.

My mother (the original Mommy Dearest) worked as a hat check girl. My dad who was orphaned at four when his dad died in Carizozo New Mexico on a cattle drive, joined the military at l4 - his mom lied to get him in because of conflicts with her new husband. He was in the last Army calvary unit. After l0 years of service, he left and road the rails for a couple years, then worked as an iceman and finally wound up working for his brother.

His sister, my Aunt Grace, is the reason I have some l9th century paintings on ivory - she was part of the Riverside "good families" and helped out her friends who left all or part of their estates to her. When my aunt died, her l3 heirs split everything up amicably.

My mother's family was more colorful - her sister and sister's husband minded a still during prohibition. Another sister had a sugar daddy who bought her fur coats and jewelry which his wife and daughters tried to repossess when my aunt was dying of cancer (didn't work). I wound up with some of her jewelry.

Most of my family is dead now, except the cousins, but I have my own family that I have created and adopted and they are great!

I have a horrible family health history but I would never ever ditch them. They are my strength and help. I would not have made it through this mess without them.

One interesting thing about my family... My grandmother's father (My Great grandfather?... I think) used to bootleg w/ Al Capone up in Chicago during the depression/ the 1930s. Just recently found that out. Never would have thought it. Strict, law abiding catholic family!!!!

Lisa - oh my god! My Uncle Chick - the one who minded the still with my aunt Ethel - was also a card sharp - my cousin and I used to play house with the retired casino chips (I remember they had airplanes on them). Anyone, Capone used to play at his table occasionally!

LOL How funny, We cornered my Aunt Jane My Grandma's oldest and questioned her about it. It was a SHAMEFUL family secret! Too funny. She was worried about the families' reputation. I said Pish Posh - forget all that. It's Al Capone for Christ sake. That is some interesting stuff. She says she has some more stuff to tell us. We are going to talk about it (over dinner) this weekend. O My goodness I hope my G-grandpa wasn't like (that bad) Just a boot legger I'm sure.....

Lisa - enjoy! Family history is a hoot. I was much older when I discovered my adoptive mother was my adoptive father's rebound wife - the woman he loved committed suicide so he married my mother. Bad choice!

Hope you find out about some family skeletons! They are the best!
