Hello, I am new here in search of an outside support system.
In December, my husband and I will celebrate 20 years of marriage...that's if we make it. We have hit yet another rough patch. I can't tell you how discouraged I feel having hit this one. Let me give a little background.
We married in 1998 and it was true love. There's no doubt about that. About 6-7 years in the 7 year itch ocurred and we had to overcome one of our most difficult obstacles that was infidelity. Since then (about 15 years) we have truly fought to keep our family in tact. It has not been easy. Those folks that suggest that infidelity takes a year or two to get past are entirely sugar coating that. It is something that changed us and our relationship suffered from for years. With that said, it also made us stronger in many ways. In 2008/2009 we separated for about 10 months. Issues still resulting from the infidelity. If I can advise ANYONE of anything in all of this...it is to seek professional help ASAP. We should have done it earlier on, but my husband was opposed. Well we finally got into true blue therapy and it did wonders. It really helped us to re-connect.
Fast forward to 2018. I feel my husband puts very little effort into communicating when we disagree or have an issue. He is a good time guy and basically checks out when the going gets rough. Leaves me left holding the bag of emotions and feelings all on my own. He shows no sign of empathy whatsoever and we can go days without resolving it. My fear and anxiety get the best of me and I will beg him to work through it. He just shuts down. He will fall asleep and leave me anguishing all night into the next day into the next day into the next day. He basically avoids any and all conflict or feelings. It is not healthy and it is exhausting. After 20 years of this type of pattern I feel myself becoming so worn down. I feel that narcassitic personality of his is finally starting to push me to the brink and to the point of no return. I need to be able to share my feelings and not be left alone or shut out carrying the issues on my shoulders. He goes about his normal day eating, drinking, socializing, gaming, whatever...and I just feel so alone. I realize counseling may be necessary once again and hope that I can convince him we need it. But it is so discouraging. After 20 years of truly fighting to keep us alive, I am questioning myself, my decisions, my resilience. Why did I choose to try to make this work this long? Why did I choose such a difficult life for myself? Should I have started over many years ago or should I just understand that all relationships hit the skids and all relationships go through these awful phases that leave you feeling alone, anxious, scared and hopeless. Is this freaking normal?
It is clear to me one of the biggest mistakes I have made in all of this is investing every ounce of energy into my relationship/family to the point of having no outside support. I don't have family support (long story) and as far as friends go...I try not to share our nitty gritty marital details. I have learned over the course of 20 years that sharing marital issues often cause problems all around for everyone. So, I stay very private. Ultimately, I feel that my husband knows I have no one to turn to, and he knows that if he ignores me for several days in this weakened state I will eventually sweep my feelings and hurt under the rug, stop crying or speaking about my hurt and I will simply move forward.... the best I can. He knows me well enough to know that my biggest passion is to keep this family together and my biggest weakness is to gain enough strength to actually turn my back on him and leave the relationship. He basically ignores me until I simmer down and give up. That is what I am conditioned to do.
Ok... SO, how pathetic do you all think I am? Does anyone identify with this at all?
Thank you for giving me an outlet that I so desperately needed.

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

I'm horrified! I knew my insurance would go up due to getting a new car but I didn't expect it to go up over $2,000. I did have an accident with the snow/ice in the winter. I was just telling my brother that I have had my car since March 2, 2026 and have only spent $75 on an oil change. Now this! I called another insurance company and their quote was over $4,000. I guess I have to pay...
I do understand what you are going through. Lots of guys get too lazy the longer they are in a relationship. Some take it for granted, they stop trying. Figure you'd never leave them anyway....
Well, maybe you will leave or maybe you will stay, but it doesn't seem that you can go on like this, because you are not happy. I would advise seeking counseling for yourself. And also, if you can go out with friends sometimes, see family, etc. Just be out more. It'll make him miss you and he'll wonder what you're out doing. Have to wake him up a little bit! :)
True love doesn't place this type burden on the one they love. He has his priorities all messed up and needs to get things straightened out before he loses you. I also am a realist and know that you are the one who has to make the decision of what you truly want in life. That decision may not be easy. You can contact me if you wish to discuss this further. I am also a Pastor of a church in my hometown.
in your case not so.
regardless of who did the 7 year itching
he's decided to sap your strength for the past decade, that is shitty thing for a stranger to do, for a person that vowed to honor you - that is sick
divorce blows, it takes a long long time and saps resources, HOWEVER, you can recover from that, you won't ever recover if you remain with him
divorce is tough on kids. I'd bet that this marriage is tough on kids,
their family is comprised of mm that puts air in and dad that sucks air out
take a hard look at what he does for the family, i'd bet more - than +
Your name... Overcoming Fear... I should have claimed that for myself. I have allowed fear and guilt to stop me dead in my tracks my entire life. My stbx , family, friends all know this all too well. is very sad to think that he is the only one who seems to take advantage of this.
We are almost to 16 years, but I filed and started divorce proceedings months ago. He doesn't want it but wants things the same. For us, the last 11 years he has shut down both physically and emotionally... no communication, affection or help of any kind. I am so tired of giving 110% and getting back 20%..
For me, the guilt I often get sucked back into because it is to be for better or worse... sickness and health .. through good and bad... The question I would ask for both of us... Why should we have to endure all the negative that is heaped upon us by our carefree spouses??? I always thought our spouses were to work with us (not against ) and provide support, love and understanding... with both making us better , happier people (Ours are tearing us down)
My thoughts and prayers are with you. (and a hug or two) Please know that all our feelings should be able to be expressed and we deserve to be heard, respected and loved. (Hey, I can still dream. lol)
I do admire your strength and courage. You truly are facing that fear head on and (while it will sometimes be very hard) I do believe you will come out stronger, more resolved and happier . God bless.
What I did find, and have heard so many, many times, is that in a marriage, it is not two people, but actually three - you, your spouse, and God. I pray when I need encouragement and healing.
I completely empathize with your not having anywhere to turn. My family walked away, friends, church, etc.
I will be praying for you and your marriage and for some comfort and peace.
