I do hope you have a lawyer. If not you can get a free consult with one or more, and make sure to bring this matter up. You'll have enough on your hands trying to take care of your kids and yourself. Please don't be offended by this, but it sounds like he still has you wrapped around his finger a little bit. Protect yourself, don't fall for manipulation.
The only reason why you would be liable for his school loans is if you guys consolidated his loans under both of your names at some point (maybe for a lower interest rate). If so, then I'm afraid you're as obligated to pay it back as he is.
Whatever the case, if he's trying to get you to pay for half of his med school loans, is he paying you half of the income he enjoys as a graduate of med school?
They pay back $22,000 per year of work for 4 years, in other words $88,000, if you work for a underserved area. They pay regular physician's salary.
I think the suggestion of that may scare the crap out of him, if he is one of those yuppy types as this usually involves working way out in a rural area or the inner city.
Also, I am sure the military would be willing to work with him.
