They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.

i come from a past of being cheated on, lied to, and manipulated by the men i chose to have in my life. i was raped at 17, my virginity stolen, and had reckless, unsafe relationships with people after that. i was used by two different guys to cheat on their girlfriends, that i didn't know about, and was also played out of $300 by one of those men.
then finally, in august, i met an amazing guy. i felt i could be myself around him from the very first time i met him. we just clicked, and he was so interesting and fun to talk to and be around. he offered adventure and excitement. best of all, he didn't force me into having sex on the first date, which was something i had grown to see as normal by then. on the third date, we had sex, on my own terms for once, because it just felt right. that same day, he asked me to be his girlfriend. i was really nervous, because it was happening so fast and it seemed like he was trying to rush it. but i said yes, for fear of losing the best guy i had ever come across. and that was that.
a month into our relationship was when it should have ended for good. he lived about half an hour away from me, and we took turns driving to see each other each weekend. i had finally gotten hired after a year of searching for a job, and i randomly got called in to fill out paperwork on one of the days that he was driving to see me. he was already on his way, but i didn't have to come in until later that evening, so i figured i could just tell him that today we wouldn't be able to hang out for as long as usual. he didn't respond well to that at all. we were sitting at a park bench in silence, when all of a sudden he just said, "all right, well, lets get in the car." i didn't know what he had planned, but nowhere in my mind did i even fathom that he had bad intentions. we got in the car and he rolled up the windows, so that nobody would be able to hear the sounds i would inevitably make. then he told me to lay my head in his lap and he proceeded to violently and angrily choke me with both hands. i couldn't breathe, and i tried to scream for him to stop but i could feel the sides of my throat touching each other when i tried to speak. i tried hitting his arm and kicking the window but nothing would make him stop. it was a nightmare, and it sent me right back to that moment when i was raped -- helpless and nothing i could do to stop it. he was so angry at me over such a small thing.
after it was over, and he allowed me to sob in his car for an hour, i asked him to take me home. i was traumatized to the point where i had to go back to my old rape counselor for advice on how to deal with this now abusive relationship. she finally convinced me to break up with him and cut it off. but when i did, he guilt tripped me and told me things that made me seriously second guess my decision. he brought up how bad guys have treated me in the past, and how all the guys i know now just want me for sex, but that he's different. he told me how boring all the other guys would be, and how hard it would be for me to find another person that i could be myself around. and he was completely right. and i couldn't shake the things that he told me. i actually took the breakup that i initiated even worse than he did. i kept trying to talk to him, to remain friends at the very least. but he knew i craved affection, and so he kept that from me, saying if we kept talking it would be like we were dating again, and "obviously i didn't want that from him."
we saw each other a few more times after that, and those times were interesting. one seemed really good, like we really bonded. and then one time, he spat in my face during sex, out of anger again, which made me feel like he only saw me as an object. i decided right then and there that it would be the last time i ever saw him.
however, a week later he called me, saying that his mom had kicked him out of their house and that he was homeless. when we were together, he always told me how he cut off all his relatives and lost contact with all his friends from high school. i was literally the only other person in his life besides his mom and siblings, and now he lost them too. he was almost crying on the phone, something he told me many times before that he thought he couldn't do anymore. i caved, and made it my personal mission to help him get through this.
that alone was a complete rollercoaster ride, especially when his car engine blew out completely and he also got fired in the same day. in a way, it seemed like karma for what he had done to me. but he was at such a low point that i felt so bad for him and it started to stress me out as well. i got my family involved to see if they could help, and my grandparents offered to rent him a room, which he did. my mom absolutely loved him, saying he seemed like such a "nice and gentle young man". i had to bite my tongue so hard.
he lived with my grandparents for awhile, eventually getting a new job and renting his mom's second car. but my grandma was recently diagnosed with stage 3 lung cancer, and so she told him that once she starts chemo, she doesn't want him living with them anymore.
so he was homeless again. my mom said he could always come over to our place to shower, charge his phone, and even stay for dinner if he wanted. we saw each other pretty much everyday. my brothers started to see him as this cool, older guy, and he would always go to the park with them and play basketball. we would go on amazing dates together, and he would act so cute towards me. he would buy me small gifts, even though he should have been saving money, because of the whole homeless thing.
i would of course buy him things too, a lot more than he did, but that wasn't really an issue. i would buy him food most of the times we hung out, i bought him expensive work boots for his new job, and i also bought him car shades when he asked for them. at one point he even asked me to pay his phone bill, and that was when i started to get pretty wary of how much money i was spending on him. we got in a fight over that, and he eventually just said "screw it" and that he would pay for it by himself. we got in fights over a lot of little things, and it always started with him getting irrationally angry. the majority of the time, it takes two people to fight, but i'm not exaggerating when i say that these fights could have been avoided, but he just made it a much bigger deal than it needed to be.
we fought more and more, and money got tighter and tighter. i was terrified of being used again, but i wanted so badly to make it work. this past weekend i was extremely stressed, because i had a speech due today in my public speaking class. i planned on using the entire weekend to prepare for it, but got called in for two 8 hour shifts at work.
yesterday night i had work, and when i got off my boyfriend was waiting in his car next to mine. i saw his car and bought him candy, and then he said he was hungry so we went to get something to eat. of course, he made me pay for it. i was really stressed in general, but the past several times we've hung out has been coming out of my wallet, and none out of his. of course, he is homeless and i don't blame him for wanting to save money. however, it's just a bit concerning that he waited for me to get out of work, just so i could buy him food. once we got the food, he asked if he could come over the next day (today) to shower and charge his phone. i said no, i had to prepare for my speech finally.
after that, he ate his food, said thank you, and just left... without even hugging or kissing me goodbye.
i felt like my concerns had come true, and that i had been used for my money all over again. but i couldn't stress about it, i had a speech to prepare for.
i stayed off of my phone all day today, just working on my huge speech. after my public speaking class was over, and i finally had that giant weight lifted off my chest, i checked my phone... only to find a text from him, saying that "stuff isn't going the way it's supposed to between us, so it's over." i was completely blindsided and panicked, trying to call him five times and then texting him on two different apps to call me. i sent a snapchat video where i talked about how i felt and asking what i did wrong.
he finally called and basically said that, last night, it just seemed like my willingness to help him was getting lower, and that i didn't have as much "enthusiasm" about helping him as i usually do. i tried to explain that, yeah, i'm stressed about my school assignment and stressed about how much money i've been spending lately. but i still did it because i obviously care about him. he then said that it just seems like i'm giving up on him, and that it makes him angry, because "if i'm not going to support him during the bad times, why should i be able to stick around for the good times?"
so apparently this entire past month of me helping him out, being there for him, buying him all these things, and providing emotional and moral support... apparently that all doesn't matter anymore, because i wasn't 1000% happy about buying him food one night.
i keep going from being extremely sad and sobbing uncontrollably about this, to feeling bittersweet because.. yeah, i lost someone i had good memories with, but i also kind of dodged a bullet as well.
i'm going to return his hoodie to him tomorrow. and then that'll be it. i just don't really know what to make of this whole situation. logically, i know i didn't do anything wrong (or anything out of the ordinary for a normal human being), and that he is the one with the distorted expectations. but i still just can't help but feel so deeply hurt by this. after everything he put me through and everything i have done for him, this is what makes me undeserving of his company. i don't know how to move on.

Hi All.... It's great to see all of the new people joining the site... Let me start by saying he didn't select you for abuse, you selected yourself to be abused. Abusers abuse. That what they do. He tried it on with you and you cried and made excuses for him. That's how you became his girlfriend. Guys like him try it on all the time and end up abusing the ones who stay. Young innocent people who have no skills for dealing with abuse are easier to prey on. I'm 100% certain that after he's tried this kind of behavior with some women, they told him to fuck off in no uncertain terms. It's a numbers game for him, not love. Guys like him are too busy loving themselves to have any real care for another person.
They're manipulative and some women are gullible enough to pay attention to his words instead of his actions. If you want to know why you end up in bad relationships, it's your willingness to allow a man to do just anything to you and probably no other reason. You're not broken, strange, or mentally ill. You are simply a person who hasn't learned to recognize the red flags for abuse and you haven't practiced saying fuck off nearly enough to suit me. Literally stand in front of the mirror and practice all the ways you can tell a guy to go take a hike. Practice the nice ways, the stern ways and the really emphatic ways. Get comfortable saying those things, cause if you don't you'll be taken advantage of fairly regularly. Whatever little dumb-ass voice that sounded off in your head telling you to feel bad about hurting his feelings is a lying little trouble maker. Ignore her from now on. She'll soon get replaced by a voice who asks questions to alert you of impending doom.
This is what worries me most:
The very first time he didn't get his way, he intentionally took you to a quiet place, rolled up all the windows and almost choked the life out of you. Instead of filing criminal charges against the man who almost killed you, you introduced him to your vulnerable grandparents. That's a really shitty thing to do them. Did it ever occur to you that he might choke them when he didn't get his way? You allowed this predator into your family and he was so slick, you mom thought he was great. You knew better though and you let her think he was wonderful. Why? Why put him in a position to take advantage of your entire family? Is some dumb ass abuser more important to you than the people who spent their lives raising you? If your family knew he almost choked you to death, how do you think they would feel about all the talking, smiling and helping him out they did? I'm betting they would be mortified.
Red Flags To Look For In An Abusive Personality:
https://www.med.unc.edu/beacon/get-help/redflagabusivepersonality.pdf
The man you wrote about above had most of the signs. He also sounds like a sociopath and/or a narcissist. Here's the thing you're not getting. To him, you are not a person. You are something to be used and discarded.
It worries me how casually you talk about "i'm going to return his hoodie to him tomorrow. and then that'll be it." After everything you've been through you are currently feeling bitersweet and going to meet with him to return his hoodie. Honestly, it's like you are in la la land. You still don't get it. This is the man who casually took you to a semi-private place and choked you. The man damaged you so bad, you had to go see your rape counselor again. The one who, no doubt, got you to see he was an abuser. Abusers are always at their most dangerous at the very end of a relationship, because if you ever meant anything, you don't anymore. To you this represents the end of the relationship, to them it's the end of their opportunity to use and abuse you. You want to wrap things up with a nice bow. What if he wants to go out with a bang? I literally wonder what it will take for you to wake up and stop doing silly dangerous things.
I don't think you should see him to return the hoodie. This could be another setup. Don't meet him unless it's at a police station. If he continues to contact you, I'd consider a restraining order. Your life is too precious. You cannot fix him. He needs to fix himself.
my friends already made sure i knew what a stupid and shitty person i was for forgiving him and letting him into my family. believe me, i am well aware of how much of a naive asshole i must seem like. that being said, i don't like how people always believe that it's just that black and white. had he become homeless the day after he choked me out, there is no way in HELL that i would have considering bringing him to my family.
but the truth is that we put a LOT of work in on getting through that abusive moment. i am in no way condoning what he did, but i just want to explain that as i got to know his family history and the environment that he grew up in, i did start to understand why he might be prone to anger issues and thinking that acting out on that anger in a violent way is okay. after that one act of violence towards me, when i broke up with him, i could tell that he understood knew how badly he fucked up. and yes, maybe he just felt this way because he knew he was losing his control over me. that is a very likely possibility and i would not be surprised if that was why he felt so bad, rather than feeling bad because he hurt me and lost me as a partner.
but we talked so much about this. we worked through it gradually. of course i tried to shorten my original post as much as possible, because it was longer than the bible already. but it did take almost a month for me to start seeing him again. he never hurt me physically again, and never threatened to. he was extremely gentle with me after that, and even towards the end when things started getting bad again with his anger issues. he started to learn that to deal with those anger issues, he had to remove himself from the situation, which is why he left my car so abruptly the night that i bought him food.
i know it was still stupid of me to let him into my grandparents house, but i don't like that people seem to think i did this without any consideration of that whatsoever. because i could see him constantly trying to work on his issues and make up for what he did, that was why i decided it would be okay for him to live with them. i also knew that, if he is truly that classic example of an abusive person, he only knew that he could control me - not my grandparents. that was why i had him meet my parents first, to see how he acted with people older than him. it wasn't like every moment with this guy was hell, but i always hesitate to bring up these moments because no matter what i say, after i talk about the abuse and manipulation, people will always see him as a horrible guy. and rightfully so, i don't blame anyone for that. but i just know that it wasn't that black and white to me. so hopefully that all makes sense.
but yes, i was encouraged to press charges by both my counselor and my friends, but more so encouraged to go to the hospital. i didn't do either of those.
as far as returning the hoodie, i didn't read these responses until later that day, after i returned it to him. obviously i'm alive. when i returned it to him, he was saying that last night he started to really regret his decision to break up with me, and that he wanted to "cancel that." don't worry, i didn't fall for it. in fact, i knew that eventually he would say that, i just didn't know how soon.
after i had cried over our relationship ending all night the previous night, i realized that i truly did feel bittersweet about it. the things that i thought about that would make me cry about him weren't really about HIM... they were just about not having anyone to go to the movies with and go on dates with anymore. i was really mourning just not having a boyfriend anymore -- not mourning that i didn't have him anymore. and yeah, all the good memories came flooding back. all the times he made me laugh and all our inside jokes and good, happy moments. but what really made it all crystal clear to me was that, after i was done crying, i felt glad, really deep down. of course it sucked to lose someone i had good memories with, but even though it hurt it was kind of a huge weight off my chest. what confirmed that was when he asked to cancel the breakup and it made me feel worse that he wanted to get back together. i told him that it's obvious neither of us are ready for a relationship, that i have mental health resources if he wants them, but that overall this obviously wasn't good for us and we need to take the time to work on ourselves. i wouldn't say that's a nice bow, but it's an okay one.
I'm on the far side of 50. When I was 3 the zoos were the old fashioned horrible cages, and they were raised a bit higher up than we were as we walked. When the lion lifted it's leg, everyone knew to run...but me...and I got peed on. (I don't remember it bothering me all that much, but I imagine that I didn't smell that good afterwards.)
That's always been the image I've had with guys like that. They give off red flags right and left. Most people see those flags and run. Or even just turn away...or wait a bit.
It's the people that don't feel good enough within themselves, think that they can help someone else heal, or just have no clue because of their own pasts...that get peed on again and again and again.
But the good news is...that you really can learn the signs, learn to see the flags and how to avoid the lions of this world.
I've walked in your shoes and I honestly didn't get it until someone broke it down pretty hard core for me. Being innocent about men isn't a crime, you just need to learn some good skills for avoiding the ones you can't love all better. Stay safe and I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.
And yes there are some people who don't learn and just keep making the same bad decisions that keep them in the same bad place in life, but it's not every person on this Support Site. Every person you respond to gets a bashing from you and you basically tell them how stupid they are, how everything they're doing is wrong, or why they'll never succeed at anything. Geez, give some the benefit of the doubt. Not everyone sees things in black or white, nor do they only see life through your traumatically filtered eyes.
So, you didn't just dodge a bullet, you dodged the whole damn gun. Girl, you have to wise up and understand that this world is not a safe one and every man does not deserve multiple chances to prove himself and you are not a worthless person who only deserves the losers in the world. The day that loser held you and choked you in that car, the moment he took his hands from you, that right thing to do would have been to get out of that car, call 911 and have him arrested for battery. Instead you asked him to drive you home.....hon, you can't safely go through life thinking that way. You stepping out of that car and walking away while dialing 911 should have been the last time you saw that loser.
The thing with woman who've been abused, sexually, emotionally, or physically is they tend to believe they deserved or are worthless and deserve whatever losers prey on them. Their minds get mixed up because of the Trauma they've been through and it's hard to tell when these Guys who seem like good Guys are really bad. Guys like this prey on woman like you, who've been abused, who are needy emotionally, who give control over easily, they don't find you by accident. You need to be in Therapy, to be processing the things that you've been through, to learn some healthy coping skills. To learn how to raise your ego and understand that you are worth everything and you deserve a good man who will care for you, love you, be compassionate with you and never, ever raise a hand to you. Its important that you get those skills and get your mindset back in the right place.
Your a smart girl, don't waste time grieving this loser, be thankful that you're safe and that he didn't hurt you worse than he did. Focus on school and work, get into Therapy and work on getting "You" in the right mindspace so that when the right guy comes along you'll be in a good place to form a solid healthy relationship.
Take care,
Kat
after those two came my ex, and i already talked about how that turned out. i think my biggest problem with guys my whole life has been that i never felt wanted by them. i was bullied for the way i looked back in school and especially bullied whenever people found out i had a crush on someone. i think that really contributed to the whole "not feeling good enough" thing, and caused me to seek out the wrong attention. i think i want that so desperately that i subconsciously blind myself to these red flags that you talk about, in order to hold on to that one, good little piece of a person that i see in them. i hold on to that piece of them, hoping i can "fix" them and change them and whatever. it's really fucking stupid, and you're right that it needs to stop.
so i don't want you to feel like your advice went down the drain, because the personal accounts you talked about, with the mother and her son especially, did make me think about how much worse this could've gone. there's definitely a place for that type of hardcore, straight up, no BS advice, and i usually admire that type of advice a lot. but like i said, i think i'm still processing this whole thing, trying to get to the root of my problems, and so being made to feel like i'm stupid is something i already deal with coming from myself. but no worries, and i do sincerely thank you for the input!
@Bobby: my ex wasn't the one who sexually assaulted me, but he did physically assault me. i can try to branch out more at school, when i feel like i'm ready for a relationship again. thanks for the advice! :)
and it's also really difficult for me to fully label him as an abuser. the whole idea of it is kind of confusing to me, because everyone makes it out to seem like abusers are so perfect in everything they do, that they know exactly what to do and how to treat their victims at exactly the right time. forgive me if i'm wrong, but abusers are still human beings, and it's hard for me to believe that any human being is that naturally good and smart at predicting human behavior and knowing how to manipulate.
of course, it must take a long time, and plenty of victims. but it's just hard for me to put a person into that "abuser" category after getting to know them and what they've been through. i'm just stuck in this mindset that becoming an abuser is more nurture than nature, and that if they're only that way because of how they were raised, it can be fixed. that's where i get into that slippery slope of holding on to people who are bad for me, in an effort to do good for them.
The catch is...you are not the answer.
You've tried for a year...and it hasn't worked. You can try for 20-30 more years if you wish, but it's still not going to work.
His best hope is actually to be alone. Maybe get a pet. LEARN how to care for another living being. Learn how to give and take...and that's best learned Outside of a relationship.
Put another way, we make people learn the rules to driving Before they get behind a wheel. We don't just hand 10 year olds the keys and let them do whatever they want. First they have to grow and mature, and demonstrate that they can handle the car and won't run over a few of the pedestrians that come into their path. Even at 18, you just can't run over someone that made you angry.
Nope, human or not...you have to show that responsibility BEFORE you drive. And the same is true with relationships.
If you care for him...Really care for HIM. You'll let him go. He's just not ready yet. Yes, he may get into another relationship. You can't stop that. But he may just not. And instead take the time to mature. If that's the case...then by letting him go...you saved a life.
Some things to think about, and I suppose to talk about in therapy if you feel it may apply to you. I had to wake up and realize I'm just as imperfect as everyone else in the world and therefore no more or less deserving of love.
I graduated High School at 15 and had already finished half of my first year of University at that time. I also made a huge mistake and met my future husband that year. I was married to my High School Sweetheart for 25 years. I didn't date alot in School, I hated sex, I didn't trust anyone, and I had 1 goal, to keep my 4.0 GPA and get to University and get the hell out of that State and away from all those white trash psycho people.
My now ex-husband was a decent guy, we both came from abusive backgrounds and that was the glue that held us together, but he liked to drink and he drank a lot. He was a functioning alcoholic, which for the first 5 years wasn't a problem, but then a baby comes, and jobs come and go and I was still finishing my Degrees and life just happens and started being a mean drunk at times. So the few times that he hit me, or shoved me against a wall in anger, I'd excuse it away. But he drank more and more and 12 years in we had 2 kids I was out of University with 3 Degrees and was working Full Time, I was the breadwinner, he had trouble keeping a job more than 8 months to a year. I never expected to be DX'd with BiPolar and have to manage that, I never expected to have to have 30 surgeries in 18 years and have to manage major medical illnesses and have constant tests and hospital stays and 22 medications a day and still have to work full time and take care of 2 boys and make sure that they were raised so completely opposite of anything I ever experienced as a child/teen....I excused the drinking, the physical behavior and the 4 affairs, because I didn't think I could do it on my own. Funny thing was I'd been doing it on my own all along anyway. So, one day I just had enough and I packed up me and my 10 year old and moved to a condo in town, my 19 yr. old stayed at the house with his dad. My ex was never the kind of man who could be on his own, so he was with someone 4 months into our separation and remarried. I at the ripe old age of 42 lived on my own for the first time ever in my life and loved it. I could do what I want, be who I wanted, go when I wanted, had nobody to manage, nobody to be embarrassed by and nobody to constantly have to put up with. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. I would never undo my marriage if I could, because I have 2 amazing sons out of the deal, but I would not have stayed for 25 years. I would have trusted in myself, known my own worth, known that I was good enough and capable to do it on my own, I would not have been so afraid.
As I said, I think any person whose been abused has Self-Worth, Ego, Fear, and Trust issues. I think it makes it hard for them to gauge the good guys from the bad guys sometimes. But I also think that Therapy is a very helpful tool and that you can learn to become a kinder person to yourself. I believe you can learn to trust. I firmly believe that before you can be successful in any relationship, you have to learn to love and care and be compassionate to yourself first. I never thought I'd want to have another relationship, I did that for 27 years, check it off the list, I'm good. But I met a great guy 4 years ago, and we have the kind of relationship that works great for both of us. We don't care to be under each other feet 24/7. He lives in VA, I live in NC, we see each other on the weekends and usually one day during the week. We both have careers and do Volunteer work and have things that keep us busy, so our relationship works for us, we don't need to be constantly smothered with attention. This would have been the relationship I would have loved to have for those 27 years....but you get older and you learn.
Sorry this was so long, its some of my story.
you are beautiful inside at your core, the monsters that you've been with crave that
you deserve gentleness from a man, accept no less...ever
