I messed my kids up

Today was a bad morning. I woke up to my wife banging on my bedroom door telling me to get my 6 year old daughter away from her. When I came out, my daughter was screaming "stupid fuck," then proceeded to take a glass Christmas ornament and smash it against her mother, shattering it to pieces.
Now is the part which I am ashamed of...
I slapped her in the face. I have never hit my kids before, but this behavior was just too much for me to handle. I feel guilty as shit, as I am not an abuser.
My daughter has been witness to the constant arguments in this marriage. Now it appears she is acting out. I feel so guilty for what I have done. I have no right smacking a child. I had no right letting her see the hate that her parents had for one another. I fucked up...

Run..Don't walk..to counseling. Yeah, you could have a bunch of excuses but you still did it? Your child needs counseling as well. That enviorment sounds extremely toxic as well as insane. (not a safe place for children let alone adults) I feel for you but you need help..

Dude, we all get to that point sometimes, and we "fuck up". Do not beat yourself up over it, give her lots of hugs tonight..... she will be okay, but I do suggest counseling if you can find it.... I found a community based group that takes my son 2 times a week and puts them together with other kids his age and works on his social skills. We also see a counselor there one on one.... he has helped me be a better parent and also talks to my son about what is going on....

He turned me on to a good book, "A New Kid by Friday" very helpful in parenting skills and a easy read...

Hey man I have a 6 year old girl too and believe me I've worried about wether or not "I messed" her up too. I have fucked up plenty of times and felt incredible guilt. Try to forgive yourself for this and move on. You know you didn't handle it the best way you could but that happens and all you can do is try and do better next time. Good luck.

R I done this to my son one time and felt like you do. But I talked to him and apologized like 10 times. Just talk to her and tell her that you love her and give her a big hug. I'm here if you need to talk.

It's hard being a parent in the best of situations and naturally even more so when there are problems within the family.

So much good advice has already been given. The first is don't beat yourself up. We've all made mistakes. The anger and frustration on everyone's part, including your daughter's on the situation is oozing through. If you only yourself seek counseling on parenting in your situation that is one step forward. I did that on a few occasions these past six months (as the kids would not -- they are older) go in. Oh my - it helps because there is so much that is happening emotionally.

The constant conflict or animosity in the home is felt by children and does have longterm impacts - if this is your situation. Mine lasted more years than it should of.

It's clear you love your daughter and want to maintain a loving relationship with her.
