Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.
The schools would send them out when they developed fever or had rash (without a doctor's note that explained the rash and that it wasn't contagious). It's why I believe so many women who have children are passed by, i.e.the "glass ceiling," because their children makes them say NO over their job.
Kismet what way is she being treated? No one cares about reasons you don't show up, they just know that they have find someone to cover your shift.
I have worked a few retail jobs - for big corps. There is no way that any of them would allow you to bring your young child with you and let them stay in the break room all day. They aren't a sitter service. They have liability they have to deal with.
I have gotten slack from management for punching in while having my at the time, young son with me.
I wouldn't doubt if all that info is in your employee handbook..some managers follow the rules to a tee.
It's probably good to find some kind of back up plan in case this happens again.. A neighbor, or a sitter who can take care of your kid when you are in a pinch.
There are not many options for single parents when they get a call from school/ daycare telling them they need to pick up their children and they have no other options than to leave work to get them. What are us parents supposed to do in a situation like this? We don't want to lose our jobs because obviously we need it to support our families and survive, and certainly do not want to leave our children when they are ill, so if you have any other options or suggestions, please feel free to give them.

I have been working since the 70's. I have been yelled at, hung up on, had books thrown at me, been hit on, had construction workers not do as I ask because I was a woman, etc. Yet my work ethic has always been consistent and professional. I have won over foreman with my knowledge and earned their respect.
I have had crazy bosses, I have had great bosses, I have been a boss. I have been called a great boss, I have been called a mean boss. I have had women bosses who have children who have been cruel, and women bosses without children who have been sweet as pie. I have had understanding men bosses, I even had a boss who would get drunk and take his guns out to show everyone..(I'm talking about real guns) Every person, every boss is different. Every person interacts with each differently.
Through all my years of working, the advice I would give to anyone is to do your best, try your hardest, pull your weight. Treat people how you would want to be treated. If someone gives you a hard time, confront them directly and discuss your grievances.
Don't expect raises, always consider them to be something you earned, not something you expect to get.
Always go beyond your job. Always be agreeable.
If a team is relying on you and you can't deliver, have a back up, make the plan work.
In the case of the OP, what I would have done is ask my boss if he wanted me to call other employees to see if they could cover for me. That would have given him an option and more likely then not, he would have said, no, I will find someone, yet he wouldn't have felt that you were dropping the ball in his court.
Many Managers are under constant pressure and are being pulled in 100 directions at one time.. Working together and making the wheel run smoothly takes a whole group. A bump in the wheel can throw everything off. That's why we all need to have a back up plan.. For ourselves and for our work.
My other suggestion is that if you are going to file a grievance about someone, wait a week and calm down, unless its something very urgent.
You said that the boss went to work with the flu, or a cold..probably because he needed to run the store and make sure he had coverage and was able to provide customer service to the customers who frequent the store who buy the product that pays the salaries.
Someone spoke about a state being an "at will" employment state.. But in reality whether an employer is able to let you go just because or if they have to document a reason, it's usually because the employee isn't pulling their weight.
A job is an opportunity not a right. And once you get that job, it's not set in gold that you will have it forever...
Right now I have a job that never in a million years I thought I would have to be doing at this point in my life, yet I am thankful that I do have it. Occasionally when I run into Head of HR in the hall, I thank him..he laughs..
It doesn't matter if you live in this state or that, with these rules or those... The RIGHT thing is for people to be kind to one another.
Yes, my boss came to work with the flu for a whole week when we were capable of running the store without him. He also brings in his 16 year old daughter to help out a lot. I realize there is a huge age difference between his daughter and mine, but the liability is the same, that's why I offered to bring her.
I think the District manager will be fair, but I'm still dreading it. All sorts of scenarios are going through my mind.
