I wasn't with my significant other just for the sake of being with someone, anyone. I was with him because I loved him and had hope for our future.
Grieving. I don't mean purposely wallowing in self-pity and sadness. I mean coming to terms with the fact that the person I loved has left my life and the life I had been living is no longer. There's a lot of emotions to sort through.
Another big reason- to find myself again. When you're a pair for so long i think you can lose apart of yourself because you're always thinking of the other person, sometimes before yourself, if you're like me. I think taking time alone to focus on your own interests and life is one of the healthiest things you can do.
I know that everyone doesn't think that way. I left my ex in March after almost 3 years together, and he was already dating after 3 weeks. Me- I have no interest, and I've had several invitations. I've never been one to date just for the sake of dating or trying to fill a void in my life. However, my ex was also abusive, a whole other story, so I guess that's left me with a few trust issues as well.
Finallyletgo, I like what you said and completely agree. My ex started dating while we were still living together because she said it was over and was moving on. She was actually seeing him for months before she told me this. She even asked me for relationship advice at one point. Oh yea, that was fun. Good luck with the trust issues.
In terms of a relationship, I simply cannot give something I don't currently have - that is LOVE, first and foremost for myself; it has to first be replenished & I have to redefine my identity - whatever it is..
