the only extra cost that stbx had to pay was 250.00 to file the papers - otherwise it made no difference.
Everyone''s divorce is different, but that is the fee to file. It's the fees that come after that, that can be astronomical.
We both had to get attorney's, he had to pay for all the bogus motions he filed against me, yet I had to pay my attorney to submit my answers to the court.
My divorce is a nightmare, some people's are easy - some go to mediators.
As I said every divorce is different.

A mediator in Canada is different than in the US. If you are in Canada, I can elaborate.

Lynne, are they called automatic restraining orders, or automatic court orders? Here they are called automatic court orders. - and they give you a date for a court appearance (90 days out) I think it's called the cooling down period - I called it the getting angry period.
There are 11 items on the orders and STBX is in violation of 5 of them - No one is doing anything about it though - If i wanted to, it would end up costing me more money.
it looks like ours is going to trial, and it will all come out during depositions. And we will end up with no money.

i did research i found my lawyer whos office did legal stuff for ford..dierbergs ect..

i panicked in the beginning and asked my lawyer about his lawyer..andy laughed and said his lawyer had done one - count them one divorce
and yes their were audits business analyst ect..he had to pay for it all.

rbm, a mediator basically sits with you and helps you and spouse decide how everything will be split. - Since yours said he's not going to give you anything, then I don't think he'd agree to that.

Mediators can also come from a legal background (ours was a retired family lawyer) or a psychology background. In my case, he helped us draw up a legal (in Ontario ) separation agreement, which had to be checked over by both of our attorneys before the signing. The benefit of this route is that you ( and your stbx ) are in control of the outcome and you don't have to go to court for a judge to determine who gets what. It is also private, whereas, anything that goes to court is public record. It takes two willing parties however.

it cost me an additional $300 to have my divorce complaint filed in the courts, the attorney was a base of $2500 retainer then $175 per hour after that--I have paid an additonal $80 for an apprasial of his retirement because he refused to disclose this to my attorney, I also had the house appraised and will probably have to pay to have the rest of the house items appraised all because he is being such an ass. My attorney will ask for some of this back and we are going for everything we can so we have to get all of our ducks in a row before we go to court. But as everyone has said it is different in every state and every attorney can and does charge his own rates and spends the number of hours they choose on each case. I wish you luck.

My attorney told me it is important to be the one who files. The reason for this is because then your the complaintant and they have to defend themselves. It puts you in the right seat so to speak. My stbx has to pay me back ALL of the attorneys fees. I think that depends on your state.
