Just broke up with someone or in the midst of a difficult divorce? Breaking up is difficult no matter what the circumstances are. They say that time heals all wounds, but sometimes a listening ear or a hug can work wonders for the heart. Whether you need a place to vent, someone to hold you to No Contact, or need advice about what to do, we're here to help.

If you don't have an attorney I would start talking with one as soon as possible. The state you live in will have an influence over whether you receive alimony, but if it is an alimony state and given the length of the marriage, you are probably looking at indefinite alimony.
Know that the financial goals of divorce, as stated by the courts, are that each party maintains a post-divorce standard of living as close to their current lifestyle as possible. At the conclusion of my divorce, the judge asked each of us if we thought we would be able to maintain the same standard of living post-divorce as we had had while married. That really is a laughable question, but we both had to answer "yes". The point to this is, if you're in a nice town, driving a nice car, have a nice house - you won't wind up with $100 a month alimony and child support, buying your grocery with food stamps, having to get insurance for your kids on the open market, renting a flop house. Your ex will have to share his comfy income with you and the kids. I would suggest you start toward your degree pronto - take a summer class or two, then go full strength over the fall and take a full course load. Depending upon your state, alimony may be short lived, or longer lived.
That being said, it is all terrible. So, pick your poison.
I too was terrified I would be broke. My lawyer (a very savy, funny, lady) told me "Every woman I work with thinks she's going to be a bag lady. Doesn't matter if she makes $ 0, $20k, $100k, $1 million. They all believe they will be on the streets. They aren't and neither will you be." She was right. It will be an adjustment, but you can do it. In my case, I have to pay spousal support to my ex who was a stay-at-home dad. We were just breaking even. Seemed impossible that I could hand over a sizeable chunk of my salary and still manage. But, I do.
And you will do it too. I am sure of it.
Start positioning yourself now!
Good luck!!
