I make about 70k a year. I travel for a job I don't really want to do, working around 70 hours a week so she could stay home and home school our son. She has a masters and owns her own business. I barely made it out of highschool and the industry I'm in is doing more lay-offs. She has the abilitly to make easily twice what I do in a very secure field. Now that she wants a divorce (not me), I have to pay $1300 a month for one child. I know that will change when I get a new job and she works more hours, but does that sound right?
I also agreed to keep paying the mortgage ($1600/mo) for as long as it takes to sell the house even though I've already moved out. I will pay whatever I have to; I have no intention of being a deadbeat. It just seems like we never spent that much per month while we were married. We're trying to have a civil divorce, no lawyers, so I don't want to make an issue of this. I guess it just seems unfair and I needed to vent.

But don't let a silly prejudice like that get in the way of looking out for your own interests.

I suppose the question is, do you want her to continue to be available to home school your son, or would a change all around be in everyone's best interest?
Divorce stinks all the way around and I'm sorry you find yourself here.
WindClimber, I hate to say it, but yeah, get a lawyer to at least consult on your situation.
What state are you in? Threre are child support calculators online that you can look up by googling your state and child support that will tell you almost exactly what the courts will order....unless your child has special needs or something.
Alimony's another story.
And it's great and totally possible to do it without much lawyer involvement, but you should both at least visit one, and get an idea of how the courts would look at things.
All the other stuff doesn't matter.
I'm in agreement with everyone else here.
Get professional legal council. You can do this first consult on your own without involving her. All you'll need to find out is what your legal financial committments SHOULD be in your state.
Then,...you've got to let her know :O//

If we could agree on $1000 a month, I'd be happier with that. And I won't pay all the mortgage when I start paying the child support.
I have one son, and have him 50% of the time. I pay FAR less than you do.
