The first divorce I was young and it hurt. Now that this one is necessary for my son I am feeling a lot less comfortable about it. I am afraid I will end up trying to be too nice and end up messing things up Any suggestions on how to stay focused on the prize

Get a lawyer or at least a consultation with one - someone impartial who can give you advice. That's really important because states are all different and even the county you live in can make a difference as well as the judge you will have.

So far I am doing all the right things, fileing first for better chance at custody talking to lawyer first (on wed) ensuring I have family support and friends support. I am just too much of a nice guy sometimes and am afraid that will interfere.

Thanks for the advice about the lawyer. I am hoping if I just keep doing the right steps it will take over so I cant victimize myself.

Nobody - I am a family law attorney in California with 33 years experience and that is why I am totally supporting you lawyering up. Good move on your part. Divorce is so hard and confusing and you need someone to help you through the system.

I totally agree with knowing your rights and letting someone else fight for them, on your behalf. I did not lawyer up and lost big time all way around. I just wanted out, and that was a recipe for disaster. But I am free and that is priceless. I wish you the best today, and in finding your way. Hugs, Kimmee

look at your son and in the mirror every chance you get for a reminder just how much it is needed for you two.

Sounds like you are doing the right things, so keep on that path, let your lawyer get what is legally right for you and your son and keep focus on the end prize. you and your son in a safe, healthy and happy environment with all the future ahead of you.

Set a reasonable goal for the divorce and don't lose sight of it--no matter how much haggling and horse-trading and threatening your stbx does.

I never lost sight of my goal which was to keep my retirement and my tax sheltered annuity intact. My ex didn't get a nickle of it.

Believe me, it's tempting to throw in the towel, especially when things get rough. That's what your attorney is for. Make sure he/she keeps the eye on the prize too.

i would look at it like this, are you going to let him throw you under the bus. NO WAY!!!!! when it comes to the kids mama bear, those claws better come out and fast. it's all about what is best and healthiest and loving for your child. on a bit of a nicer note, when we do things for all the right reasons, we triumph. xoxoxoxoxoxo
