There are plenty of "strong" folks doing some kinda medication whether it's self or doctor prescribed.
He went to middle school and has been a straight A student since September without medications.
putting a child on a medication is a big deal and in most cases there is a whole team of people involved in this decision with the parent, but i have to say, from what I've seen sometimes children are labeled because our society managed to established rigid norms of behavior - distracted, sad, in pain - take a pill!
I was distracted, upset and nervous in school because I had two young parents in the 70's who fought constantly. My mother was constantly upset, crying and depressed. She threw my father out whenever she was ticked off. You get the picture. Chaos.
If The scenario were to replayed now, some teacher would have recommended medication for me and sent me back to that environment?
I diagnose some of these conditions and can tell you as you know with your own daughter they are very real and very rampant...I think it is the evolution the human brain a genetic mutation that is spreading like wildfire, because it is no longer "the fittest survive,' most people survive to procreate and pass on the genes and it ain't going away.
You are right we need to find ways to address these issues that don't involve just medicating them, by creating schools and homes that allow all children, disorganized, socially incompetent or manic to thrive.
I agree with you on this. I think there are definitely those kids who need to be on some form of medication to help them, but there are far too many who do not really need the medication, but who are still prescribed it.
When my eldest son was in elementary school they told me he needed medication for ADD, so we experimented with one type and he had a total personality change when on it, and so I refused to allow him to continue. This was about 18yrs ago, anyway, I decided I would control his behaviour by cleaning up his diet. Removing ALL flavourants, colourants and preservatives from his diet - the transformation in him was quite amazing, and he went on to do extremely well in school ending his High school in mainly honours and AP classes. He is now an Engineer.
So my humble opinion is that I think we are almost poisoning our kids these days with all the chemicals that are added to the food they eat and these have a marked effect on some kids ability to behave and perform in school.
The only person in my house that needed a pill was my mother.
Parents scrambling because of shortage to find ADHD drugs for kids

I can't speak for all children and their parents. My case may be not in the norm. We had the option of having a behavioral therapist come out to our home to work with us. I choose not to. This is my home my comfort zone. I didnt want to have a stranger invade it. This is where we laugh, cry, have fun, bond, and where me and my bf have intimate time and make love. I didnt want a stranger to invade that private space.
Us as parents make choices for our children. Not everyone is going to agree with our choices but they are ours alone to make. No one has a right to judge someone else for the choices that they make.
Medication has helped my son. Medication has helped me in the past. Just because you can't see an illness dosnt mean that its not there. Everyone has the right to choose what they want in their treatment options. My son will one day learn how to cope with his disorders on his own. I hope that one day with therapy and hard work he wont need the medication anymore. Only time will tell.
I also think anyone who believes these drugs are not being over prescribed to persons NOT in legitimate need is in blatant denial.
The concern being expressed here is for the safety of children in the face of greedy drug companies and some REALLY lazy/overzealous/greedy doctors.
I certainly would not want to see anyones child on a drug regimen for ADD or any disorder that was misdiagnosed. What was meant to be life enhancing could very well be life destroying.
Here's the thing. People with diabetes DO reject their insulin, and their dietary restrictions. They reject having diabetes, and they live they want to live, to hell with the consequences.
We know what some of the consequences of that are, don't we?
But in the end that's a rejection of self. As Caroline Casey so eloquently described, there's incredible freedom that comes from accepting who and what you are. And man, it really cuts down the amount of energy we use to be who we want to see ourselves as, instead of who we are.
So for me, the closest I come to this particular issue is having what my therapist playfully described as "temporary ADD" (part of PTSD). But what I find poignant is, how it has meaning for me personally in regards to being discerning about what information we question, and what info we accept about OURSELVES too.
Because breakups/divorces throw us into that whole self-evaluation mode, don't they?
I am bipolar as my user name discribes. I choose not to be medicated for my disorder ( and I have been told by doctors and therapists this isnt a good idea. My dx is bipolar one rapid cycler with SAD attachment ). I have educated myself about the illness, changed my life style, removed triggers, changed diet, added excersise, and make sure that I get the proper amount of sleep. I have also helped teach my loved ones what signs and symptoms to look for incase for some reason I go off the deep end and cant think for myself.
My point is education. Educate yourselves about these disorders. Be an advocate for the education of these disorders. There is so much stigma associated with mental health disorders.
This is my daily life 24/7 and I am passonate about it.
I'm curious what those changes are in your lifestyle and diet.
The reason I ask is, I am not bipolar, but I have come to recognize how much my hormones and deficiencies affect my mood. The hormones I can't do much about except accept the few days I'm negatively affected by them and just keep focused on the days I'll feel back to normal again -- but I'm diligent now about not just eating as well as I can, but taking B complex for reducing the effects of stress, and vit D. When I am deficient in either of those, holy crow, can I feel the difference in my moods. It seems such a small change to make, to take those vits everyday, and I am certain they're helping my physical organs more than just my front lobe, so I don't worry about any lasting side effects.
Namaste I'd be interested in hearing what things you would suggest too.
