How many people on here love tem selfs since TBI ?

I like parts of myself. Tiny tiny parts. I am no where near loving myself since TBI. I get so frustrated with myself and hate on myself and mentally beat myself up.

I had a TBI in 1/06, and my sarcasm wasn't lost. I still have a sense of humor, but my boyfriend, parents, friends say I'm nastier/meaner to them.

Jane :) The brain is a very sophisticated piece of equipment. If your computer went through what you did then it would likely need repair and not be running well if at all.

The good news in your brain can be reprogrammed! :)

Do yourself and your brain a juge favour and spend twenty dollars on a book called "CHANGE YOUR BRAIN CHANGE YOUR LIFE" by Dr. Amen. He's devoted his lifes work to brain injury. He has a website too. I highly reccommend looking into this. If you follow just one of his reccommendations your life will improve. Also just having an understanding of what you are going through and why can be so empowering.

Some expereince full recovery and others don't. However you won't know if you don't try.

I have to admit that I haven't been on this site for quite some time. It is amazing how many people have replied to your post. This tells me that this is a very common problem among those with TBIs. We've seen a lot of changes in our daughter. Some are harder then others to deal with. We are a very conservative Christian family. By the way she dresses and acts you would never know where she comes from. We have to monitor the clothing she wears as we feel it sends out some poor messages to the opposite sex. We have to monitor her spending as she will buy for no reason. She was also saying and doing some things that we thought were a bit nasty to others. Since she has been on meds, this has changed. She was always stubborn, but this has been multiplied by 10. Her stubborness helped her get through the most difficult days of her recovery, so it was helpful during that time. Now it has been a terrible downfall for her. She doesn't accept constructive criticism at all. We have to be very careful on how we word things. Some days I see the old her and then she disappears again for awhile. It is difficult for the family as her siblings are young and don't understand what she is going through. My husband and I have had to be very strict with her on several issues. The biggest one, drinking. We don't allow it in our home and really monitor who she spends time with. This is a small community, so for many young people drinking is their only outlet. Her "friends" love to take her out and watch her drink. I'm sure she is a lot of fun during this time, but the aftermath is not so fun for us. We've actually had to block numbers on her phone to prevent her from spending time with the wrong people. She is in therapy now and it is slow moving, but hopefully her therapist will help her understand why her parents are so protective. What really amazes me is how her change in tastes has changed. She used to love certain foods, but now will have nothing to do with them. I think that's strange as I love just about anything. We also have seen changes in things she likes. Things that she would think were ugly before she now wants to buy. She loves to dress flashy, high shoes, gaudy jewelery, shirts with bizarre sayings etc. Sometimes I think she is doing this to annoy all of us. To me it's sort of like......"look at me world." I've talked to her doctors about it and they just tell me that they know it has to be hard for us, but many people change after brain injury and it is something we have to accept. She prefers spending time with the opposite sex. I think she gets more attention from them. She tells us that girls are jealous of her and she doesn't like their cattiness. I don't know what to think on that one. I think it's that her old friends just don't like who she has become. I do think that guys are more accepting of changes and more open to new things. I could be wrong. We once met a young man who was on his way to West Point prior to his injury. He fell from a horse. He was a straight A student. I can't remember for sure, but I also think he managed a perfect score on his ACTs. He is now in a group home and working in a daycare setting. He told my daughter to embrace the new her and love who she is. This will make your life so much easier. Wow! Isn't that amazing?! I haven't talked to this young man for quite some time now, but do know that since we last spoke his parents divorced and his mom is now living closer to him. All the changes can be so difficult for everyone. The love your parents have for you is ongoing no matter what the changes are. Allow them to be a part of your life, let them help you in any way they can, accept their weaknesses as your own, and above all listen to them when they are trying to be helpful. Their helpfulness may not come across in a way that is the way you would like it to be, but try to sort out what will work for you and go with it. Best Wishes always!
