Bisexuality Support Group
Bisexuality is a sexual orientation which refers to the aesthetic, romantic, and/or sexual attraction of individuals to other individuals of both their own and the opposite gender or sex. Most bisexuals are not equally attracted to men and women, and may even shift between states of finding either sex exclusively attractive over the course of time.
At 16 I guess the first - but my advice on offer depends on which stage she is at!.
She may later discover that she likes one gender more than the other. And that she is not truly Bisexual. But either way if she is curious about her sexuality or truly Bisexual she will need your support and direction.
It is so important to have family and friends that she can trust that will accept her no matter what. My Mom absolutely hates the fact that I am Bisexual. It has been a very scary and difficult journey for me.
I lived my life as a heterosexual woman until I was 27 years old. It was then that I met and fell in love with my girlfriend. It was scary to discover that I was attracted to women and I didn't know what to make of it.
I was raised Christian and taught that same sex relationships were wrong. That made accepting myself as a Bisexual woman extremely difficult. I later developed my own set of beliefs and values. I believe that God made all of us and that He loves all of us regardless of what our sexuality is.
I think it is more important to love people and to treat people with respect the way you want to be treated. I later discovered after doing some research that I am actually Bisexual and Pansexual. Pansexuality means that you love without limits and that you love a person based on who they are as an individual regardless of what gender they are.
It is a more spiritual and deeper kind of love. I am still Bisexual because I am sexually attracted to both men and women. I hope that you feel at home here and that you get the help and support that you are looking for. Best wishes and hugs...Art
I knew how to protect her from boys, sex and other things but I don't know how to support her and at the same time put limits in place that any teenager needs without alienating her if that makes sense.
I just want her to make the right decisions regardless of who she loves in order to have the best life possible. I guess I'm at a loss to find the balance of being supportive and being the one in her life to tell her when she strays and what is important if that makes sense.
I don't want her to feel like she's being attacked for her choice when I set rules that I feel are appropriate. Not because she is bisexual but because she is 16.
I've also had the same thought as art4life in that she might be going through a phase but if I bring that up to her will she see that as me being in denial or demeaning her? Would I be in denial for thinking that or would it be wishful thinking?
My mind is all over the place right now.
Although it would be good to keep in mind that she might be going through a phase, it's likely she isn't, and regardless of whether or not she is, she almost certainly believes she's not. It would be very hurtful (to me, at least) if my mom tried to convince me it was only a phase... not to mention demeaning. Try to accept her for what she says she is, while accepting that she might find something different as she continues to learn more about herself. Best of luck, and I commend you for being supportive.
Just keep doing what you are doing. Just offering your love and support is amazing! As a mom now, I hope I can be as supportive as you if my son has questions in his teenage years.
I could never tell my family that I was interested in both sexes. They are strict christians and have a hard enough time accepting my love for tattoos, let alone attempting to get them to accept my love for both men and women!
Good luck with your journey.
