Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
hurts............I always tell myself time will heal !!!!!!
I was also cursed with an ex husband who could not accept the fact that bipolar had such a catastrophic effect on my life and our relationship.
To try to be constructive on this post, here's what I tell myself during such instances of people throwing my illness in my face. Simply because they do not agree w/ the way I am behaving.
I once read that "every attack is a cry for help." This usually helps me process unfair criticism. It is especially hard when I know the person is attacking me out of ignorance of my disorder. So many in my family cannot keep in mind that my behavior - whether in depression or mania - is deeply affected by the chemicals raging through my brain. This has resulted in my 2 younger sisters and my 11 year old daughter completely refusing contact w/ me. I have respected their wishes and left them alone. But the pain washes over me at times and I can't help but feel unjustly persecuted. Oh well, that comes with the territory. Even "well" people feel persecuted sometimes.
Bottom line: It does help me to remember what I read. When I can keep my ego out of it (very hard in a mania!!!) I am able to try and respond to what is causing them to feel attacked. As best I can guess it. Since people who feel under attack can rarely articulate what is *really* bothering them, this is always a sticky situation. I try my best, and sometimes it does help to diffuse the situation. When I try to address their "hidden" pain that they are not expressing. And I try to ignore their personal attacks against me and my disorder.
Whew, am I wordy tonight! Great discussion topic!
one of the last things my ex boyfriend/best friend said to me was that i was on a bipolar rampage.
story: i went to visit him this previous summer and i had a mental breakdown.. and ever since we broke up he has used that as an excuse.
he has once told people to "not mind me, i just have bipolar"
it sucks when things we can't control are used against us.
Well at least you have meds to take, there are no meds to stop her being a nasty bitch.
I've been in this situation. It never ceases to amaze me that people will sink to this level. It is obvious, and it should be to anyone older than 3 years old with a little compassion, that this kind of comment is really going "for the balls." For a person to intentionally seek out the one thing that would be the most hurtful to you is the cruelest thing a person can do. Instead of letting this comment make you feel bad, focus on the amazement that you ever loved anyone who was so lacking in empathy, compassion and understanding. Then, be thankful that she is no longer in your life poisoning you with her venomous personality. Give yourself a hug from me.
