Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
I take Latuda which hasn't caused any weight gain in my experience but at first it was working great but now I'm starting to get manic, depressive, and psychotic episodes again (I have schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type). But I'm worried to try other meds because I have an eating disorder and one of my biggest fears is weight gain. I remember my first medication I believe was Seroquel and it worked very good but stopped taking it because I gained weight. Maybe in the meantime I should make lifestyle changes such as sleeping more and avoiding alcohol, or atleast drink less than I usually do (I also have a drinking problem). Please comment your experience with medications and how they affect weight. Thank you.

Here is my new brother, copper :) He's so tiny! Moo and Tuck were ok with him on first meeting. Rocket due to his severe aggression will never meet Cooper.

I know I'm not addressing your question however I don't know that too many meds won't have a 'weight gain' potential that might be helpful for Schizoaffective disorder
I used to be on one of the old major tranquillizers …. Perphenazine and I didn't have any untoward side effects however some people do..... I quite liked the med..... Your psych may be willing to try one of the older drugs
There are many meds that don't cause weight, and some are individual, Lamictal, Latuda, and Topamax are the big 3 that don't cause weight. I used Seroquel for years and never gained weight, but some people do.
Have you talked to your Pdoc about an increase in your currant dose? Instead of changing meds, sometimes an adjustment can do the trick and get symptoms back under control. I'd make an appt. with your Pdoc and see what he/she thinks about meds at this point.
Take care,
Kat
I think most psych meds make you fat. At least, that has been my experience. I hope you find something that works.
No drug affects everyone the same way.
