Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

I moved halfway across the country to be with my family almost two years ago. as a result, I am now dependant on my parent once again. My dad has mental health issues that he isn't taking care of. He drives everyone crazy. His behavior really fucks up my mental health.
What really pisses me off, is that everyone else refuses to address the issue. We all know he is a problem, but I'm the only one willing to speak up about it. When, like today, I bring it up with them, they all give me the same bullshit. "I can only change myself", or "your relationship with him is seperate from MY relationship with him." If someone is a problem, you should address it, ESPECIALLY when a person cannot escape the relationship. If I had children with someone, it is ABSOLUTELY my responsibility to get involved if my spouse is causing them harm.
It was my mom who wanted me to move here so badly, and now she just sits on her hands, like she has no responsibility to me now that I'm here. I feel cheated.

Here is my new brother, copper :) He's so tiny! Moo and Tuck were ok with him on first meeting. Rocket due to his severe aggression will never meet Cooper.

In Alanon I learned boundaries, I learned to not be codependent, meaning I can't control others, or change others...and yes, I Totally Agree It Can Make A Person Nuts and So Frustrated....this is when You Are Giving Your Control Over To the Manipulation of the alcoholic who refuses to stop drinking or the person with a mental health problem who refuses to get the help needed for good relationships with family and community.
I think it makes sense to do what they teach in Alanon to some extent, but NEVER addressing an issue is a problem. My mom talks to me all the time about how unhealthy his behavior is, but refuses to bring it up with him or even confirm what I say. as a result, he thinks I'm just making it up because I'm angry with him. It feels like being bullied, and all the teachers turn a blind eye, and when I fight back, I'm told that I'm as much a problem as him.
You are in a position of reliance on family - can you play the grown-up role and be a leader and talk calmly and thoughtfully about what you are seeing in your own family? Its a lot to take on and its tough when you are the one seeking treatment that may also have some roots in family experiences, too. Its all very frustrating but know that you aren’t alone. While you cant solve the problems, you can decide what your role in the family can be…… and it doesn’t mean you have to be the dependent child. You are an adult now. I know when I went through mental breaks it was almost like my situation was the catalyst for bigger family discussion. Sending supportive waves your way.
You are basically in this position... It's different in the fact that you love your dad but if he doesn't want to help himself there's nothing you can do about it period
You'll just end up being codependent and your goal in life will end up being trying to 'fix' someone who doesn't want to be fixed
I would have a discussion with him and let him know what your concerns are and ask him if he's willing to get help... Let him know that you'll be there to support him through him getting help
If he says no I will not... I would move on and live your life... You going down with him will help no one and I know that it's hard..... Big hug and a blessing....xo
