I've heard more than once that it's a good idea to make plans for a future manic episode while you're not manic. What safeguards do you set up and how do you go about making a plan for your loved ones to handle the situation should it arise? Also, what's the odds of having a manic relapse even on medication? Should I almost bet on another at some point?

It took allot of years of therapy to be able to include loved ones in my therapy support network. They are so close to my heart that objectivity is just about impossible.
Mania for me is usually a crisis of self-care everything falls apart starting with sleeping 8 hours and eating regularly. I want to spend money and travel and do superhuman things...
None of it is realistic and yes medication usually gets left behind when I need to go up. Ask your pdoc to come up with an emergency plan and set aside the meds for such an occasion....
Good on you for thinking about all this before it hits!
I have plans in place to keep myself from blowing thousands of dollars on crap.
I have plans in place for when I notice depression coming on, that get me up and moving and not just sitting/laying in bed waiting for it to take over.
I have father molestation issues, so when manic I don't go to bars or have random sex, I don't like men and that's not my thing. If it were, I'd have safeguards in place to have friends or a family member keep me from going out, i.e. keep my keys or car, keep my wallet, or keep my at their house.
When your stable is when you can think of all the things you did, and come up with real rational ways to not do those things. So its the best time to think about the behaviors you did, and then get with a friend/spouse/or family member and make a plan how you'll stop those when it happens again.
Yes you are on meds, and I hope in Therapy as treatment, your Therapist can also help you come up with coping skills and plans to keep you safe in the next Manic Ep. I'd love to tell you since your in Treatment that you'll never have another Manic Ep., but it generally doesn't work that way. The meds and Therapy lessen the frequency, but rarely do they stop the symptoms % forever.
