Does taking medication affect you're ability and desire to work on you're art?
I've noticed that before I started taking meds, which was years ago, I was churning out some impressive sketches and writing more vivid and elaborate stories or poems daily. After getting on meds it was as if my internal muse just up 'n left.
It still comes to visit occassionally, but that doesn't seem to happen often. I was shocked to realize recently that the last time I picked up my pencils was almost a year ago, but I just haven't felt inspired the way that I use to. I've tried to force it in hopes that something will spark, but I don't feel the same connection or buzz...
I've even had crazy thoughts about stopping my meds just to try and get it back, but the logical side of me knows it's not worth the risk. Still, I feel like I'm losing a part of me that I really care about, that I take pride in.
Anyone else in the same boat?

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

My experience is that depression can reduce the muse and the pull. Execution can be difficult.
Hypomania may increase the muse and sometimes the pull inappropriately (like I should be working but I'm writing a novel) but often messes with the execution.
I have more or less kept going for 30 years, with breaks down to depression. Music produced when hypomanic wasn't quite right.
Conversely I write alot when I am hypomanic and it is amusing..but I see my music as a lot more important.
I've seen a number of studies re lithium, most are small and the results are mixed. Some artists do less on lithium, some the same and some more.
It looks as if it is an individual thing.
I would stress that my personal measure would be to produce a work that is acceptable and original, not have alot of ideas you don't get around to finishing.
i had a fit once where i cut up a painting i was doing, h kept hovering and telling me how to do my work, it was a wave. he is a surfer. suppose he had the right. i had enough so i cut it with a knife into quarters... there, theres the effin wave.
he leaves me alone now with my work. that is a plus, he encourages me to paint.
i have many ideas stored up in the noggin, too many. they need to be unleashed!
I'm usually working on about 2 pieces at one time..generally I have a number of sketches, I dread to think how many..but if I don't have the muse I go through the sketches and select one to work on.
i'd say stay with the medications, but do ask the doctor to see if you could toggle with the medications and dosages to help retain balance while getting your creative side going.
my fiance constantly encourages me to read or to work on arts and craft etc to boost my creativity. he says i should think that even normal people can be creative, if they nurture that talent.
