Personally I have tried marijuana and am intrigued in the effects of shrooms. I guess it's a learn it the hard way experience.

I don't know what the interactions are between his meds and these things. My experience long before I was ever diagnosed is that they can permanently change the way you percieve the world and if you are prone to negativity then you can get a bad trip which can be literally hell. Of course in my case I went back for more.

The rule of thumb is take what is and only what is prescribed. I been through the druggie route with LSD, Peyote derivatives and a hell of a lot of marijuana and now I only take what is strictly prescribed by a psychiatrist for bipolar. Now I am functional and stable. Why invite the UNKNOWN and TROUBLE?

I would print something up on the computer showing him how dangerous this is. So sorry you have to find out he is not taking care of himself and you care so much about him.

I don't tolerate a person not taking bipolar meds. You either want to get better or you don't. I personally will not deal with their mood swings. I have my own to take care of. I hope you can talk him out of it.

If it were me, I would not get involved with someone who was engaging in hard drug use. That's just me though.

Thanks everyone for your input. Yes he seems hell bent on staying sick, it's what led to our divorce. He takes his meds but then does other things that endanger himself and I can't seem to get thru to him. He stays up all night, sleeps all day (or until he has to go into work), he's a former athlete that no longer exercises and as soon as we divorced and he moved out started w the pot and now the shrooms (his brother is very into all of that and I know that's where a lot of this is coming from). But it breaks my heart because I want him to be healthy and he says all the time he wants to start going to bed earlier, wake up earlier to hit the gym and be healthier but then he doesn't do anything to follow thru. He wants us to move in together again but I don't want to live like that anymore . He says once we live together again he will get on track but I know he won't. He is the love of my life and this is breaking me up.

He needs to be clean for at least 6 months before you even consider moving back in with him. You don't need that heartache.

Yes magic mushrooms can cause permanent damage..... There's quite a bit about it on google... I know that this must be frustrating ... Is he in a depression now?... That can sure hold someone back from the things that we want to do and then of course we can end up stuck.... Big hug for you...xo

Have you considered going to Al-Anon for yourself?

Ive done it all, including Al Anon, I currently have a therapist I see regularly. My bipolar ex just seems to never listen to anyone's advice (other than bad influences). I asked him if he told his doctor about the pot and his answer was "no, because he's told me before I shouldn't smoke it". In other words if he doesn't like the advice he just hides from it. My ex can be the most wonderful person in the world but he isn't managing his illness (other than taking his meds). He is 40 now and I just keep hoping he will grow up and start to take this seriously but his answer is always "I take my meds, what more do you want". He's lost about every friend he ever had, is estranged from his siblings except the druggie brother that encourages him and , well, I'm the only person left trying to help him. I desperately want our life back (the happy times before his illness progressed) and he still loves me but I just feel dread when I think of living w him again and dread that he won't be in my life anymore. He had an emotional affair which was the tipping point to me finally divorcing him but , in my opinion, it was just another side effect of him not managing his illness.
