mental illness and thyroid problems

I am just discovering a lot of physical health problems like thyroid problems that may have/are altering my mental health. I was just diagnosed with grave's disease and raynaud's disease which could change my mental health. I am hoping in treating these physical ailments that some of my mental health issues lessen at least. If I could eventually lower my zyprexa that would be great. But not getting my hopes up too high. Is anyone else having problems like this?

Lithium ruined my thyroid. I'm now on meds for that. (Synthroid). Thyroid problems can also cause depression. So it's a big mess basically. I haven't had any problems w/other meds though.

yes i am getting a understanding of this ......i have been studing all that i can on mental illness and thyroid disorder....which i am getting my web sites to read from the Hypothyrodism group....wow...it covers all my questions about my daughter....she is so sick...and the thyroid test show that...and yes they wanted her on psy meds...but she taking the thyroid med and trying her best to get well...I dont know

Lithium has also messed up my thyroid. I also take synthroid for it.

I also have high calcium levels in my blood. Not good. When my lithium was lowered, the calcium level went down. But now I'm having mood swings every day from the low lithium.
It's mind boggling.

Lithium crashed my thyroid but I was mentally ill before that happened. When my thyroid gets out of whack I get many of the symptoms I get with mental illness. If my PCP is made aware when other doctors change meds on me that may effect his meds or my illnesses Its all good. when they take my synthroid away and don't tell my Primary and don't follow me themselves I end up bat chit crazy and in the phospital waiting for synthroid to make me less suicidal.

So you may be able to get meds lowered with treatment of the physical stuff anything is worth hoping. or you may just feel better because they are being controlled and your meds are stable and find comfort in that.

I was depressed and my GP ran a test on my thyroid and it showed it was low. He put me on thyroid replacement and my depression lifted.

Lithium fried my thyroid as well. The hypothyroidism caused a depression, and when I get low level depression usually I need a bump in my synthroid. Physical health can definitely affect mental health.
