Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.
Hello, I am new to this cite and I have bipolar type 2. I am medication resistant and had ECT done, which did a lot more harm than good (I got very sick and now I cannot remember a lot of big moments in my life and am still suffering memory loss day-to-day), and I experience suicidal thoughts regularly. Anyway, I've tried so many different medications over the past 3 years, gain 50 pounds this year alone, and when I take antidepressants, my suicidal thoughts get worse (as opposed to mood stabalizers, which do nothing). I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, if anyone else is experiencing this, or what have you. It would be nice to know I am not alone.
ALSO I have a psychiatrist and she is awesome and does what she can to help me, but we are both running out of ideas. I've tried amytriptaline, wellbutrin, prozac, zoloft, latuda, celexa, and various other things that I cannot remember, and my doctor has decided to try wellbutrin again so idk what to think really.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

You are experiencing some more pronounced symptoms than I am, but I tried many drugs over many years, and they caused me many negative side effects (painful muscle spasms, extreme sedation, extreme weight gain, complete loss of my menses, etc.). What I do now is engage in counselling. The two primary forms of mental health treatment, that are formally acceptable, according to a reputable site, are drug therapy, and psychotherapy (talk therapy). Some people use both, and some use just one. I also engage in exercising regularly, try to reduce my stress levels, and have social supports, as well as personal interests.
Have you been for counselling in the past?
It took me 3 and a half years to find a combo that seemed to help
Finding other coping skills along with it may help you gwiggle...... In the beginning for me I just became unstable..... Now I seem to get ill when I'm triggered so finding something to help you combat your triggers might help to keep you more stable
Have you been in any type of therapy?
I find gratitude helps..... I've just started using a SAD lamp..... a lot of people use exercise, meditation, journal-ling ect as coping tools
I am and have been on a couple of the older meds over time and they've worked well for me
I'm now on Tegretol, Seroquel and Restoril for sleep
When I was in a mixed state and I was on Perphenazine and it worked great and I didn't have bad effects from it
This is a great board..... I'm glad that you're here......xo
Have you tried Lithium? or Tegretol? also some med resistant patients have to use off-lable drugs, Flexeril which is now used as a Muscle Relaxer, first came on the market as an Anti-Depressant. I've used it as an Anti-Depressant before with pretty good results and no side effects. I used Lithium for many, many years and it worked well, but now use Tegretol and it works well, with low side effects. Have you tried either Lithium or Tegretol?
