Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

This one is personal, and I don't need you to tell me whether you are happily married, or married at all....
Statistics say that 95% of marriages where at least 1 partner is bipolar, end in divorce.
Throw in the fact that I have BPD, OCPD, GAD, and polysubstance abuse issues, are we hopeless??
I have an extremely supportive, extremely "normal" spouse and we have an awesome marriage, but are we doomed for failure?
Have you seen this happen??
Thanks so much.

I find myself going places in the car and not wanting to get out of the car. I come back home and I don't want to get out of the car. I think it's the only time I spend reflecting. Chronic tiredness from Long Covid plus the immunosupressing meds for my Crohn's is slowing me down but everything just seems a massive effort. I am dealing with the paperwork following my father's death but it's not...

Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner. I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings. But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!

Even if that statistic is right (and that's a pretty big 'if'), SOMEONE is going to be in that 5% part!!!!!!
Why not YOU guys!!!!?
Don't borrow trouble!!!!
You have an awesome marriage!!!
Keep doing what you're doing and you'll be fine!!!
Continued good luck to you both!!!!
(((((Hugs)))))
To all our married members - 10, 20, 30 years - were you surveyed?
Who'd they survey, the jail? The lock down unit?
don't believe hype! Two people have to work and accept, in 2014 - most westerners believe that - is a world issue, not bipolar : )
My two cents and nobody paid me! LOL
Each had a different stat on success or failures.
I think it's a matter of individuals who make a commitment , for better or for worse .In sickness and in health
Although I would prefer the "richer" part
And. It's Friday...so love that husband up this weekend!!
Xx,
beep.
My therapist bumped the # up a little.
I like all of your answers waaaaay better! I think I'll choose to be in the 10%.
my take on it is that probably only 10% of all marriages are successful long-term, mental health issues or not.
50% end in divorce
40% stay together for some reason, but can't stand each other. maybe it's dogma or financial or for the kids...but it is anything but successful.
I remember seeing something saying that the divorce rate for people with bipolar is three times as much for the normal population. The normal rate is 50%.
Therefore the divorce rate for bipolars is 150%.
basically you are being divorced by people you haven't even met yet!
I chased down the source of this once and after a "a study said.." I finally got to the source. It basically said it was the depression, not bipolar that increased the chances of marital breakdown and that the rates of bipolar marital breakdown was similar to those with unipolar depression.
Basically the real truth is that 43% of all stats are made up by lazy journalists with an addition 12.3% by people wanting to sell you a book or some kind of self help programme.
Why dwell on the divorce rate? It serves no purpose.
I have several friend with BP married to loving spouses that have been married for over 20 years. Does that mean they will last forever? No guarantee!!! But, it obviously means "something" is working!!!
I have been married for 30 years this month. We have had to work very hard in communicating, understanding, but our love for each other always won over. We have four sons, two of which have BP, very difficult to deal with as they also have addiction issues. Even with those challenges, my husband and I have stayed strong. I have to say though that he is an angel, very patient and understanding. But, I also realized that this is my disorder and I had to do everything in my power to work with it and know myself well.
You hang on to the positive and don't let statistics dictate where your relationship should be. xo
Congratulations to you and hubby!!
I met Jason on hetr. For 13 years I said I never wanted to be married again or even in a relationship. But we hit it off so well on the Boards and Hugs..we decided to call each other. We had everything in common! Five months later I flew out to meet him.
And the rest is history (as "Ode to Joy" plays in the background)
