People in the services have a duty of care to do all they can to preserve life for their own values align with their organisation that life is precious and something to be valued. When in the midst of depression its difficult to think this way about life when every day seems to be such a struggle. I myself have struggled with this and found that the only way to move on was to change my environment (even though I was forced to do this) and adjust my medications.
When explaining how important life is, its best to look at someone else that you care about rather than yourself for that way you can remain objective. Even if you don't value your own life, there is always somebody in this world that does. I cared about me ex girlfriend a great deal, and in the first 6 months we were together I was afraid to leave her side for I would think she would attempt to end her own life. After she got the support she required, I felt relieved in the fact I had done all I could and wouldn't feel responsible if she did do anything like that. But is that right? To be honest I do not how I would have been if she did follow through with her suicidal ideation's. To this day I have never lost anyone close to me from somebody dying, but I do know what it is like to never see someone that I cared about again. I was hurt by the reasons this why this was the case, but what I really experienced was grief and a sense of loss. I have seen how a death has affected other people's lives, especially when the person who had died had gone well before their time, and how their loved ones grieved their loss.
When dealing with grief, there is always a mourning period. Mourning is a process, not knowing the length of time this will take can be more painful than when the news first hits. This is due to the shock one can experience, which is natures way of dealing with the situation. Many emotions are experienced throughout this time, but eventually life does go on, but much like depression it feels like you will never get over it. But one day you wake up and things may seem at least bearable again. I don't dare to be happy these days, but I do feel relief that I do not feel as bad as I did recently.
Its no doubt we are proof of life, and witnesses to it, I'm sure that is one of the reasons why we are here, purely just to marvel at the nature. Yes we can try and impress ourselves with our own man made creations, but if you ever get tired of that, just think that one day in future generations what they will create to help uncover more secrets this world holds or even the universe. We will never know many things in this life time and our job is to keep being inquisitive and keep asking ourselves questions, who knows, maybe the paradigm will shift, leading to new ideas, inventions, and discovery. The technological advancements in communication and access to information in the past 100 or so years has impressed me more than anything. The internet as we know it is only 20 years old, if we keep talking, discussing and sharing ideas, just imagine how far we can go and how fast we can get there.
But like I said, things like this doesn't really enter the minds of a depressed person. Just engaging in every day living can be difficult and overwhelming, which is why its up to others who are in the position to do so to support a person going through this period. May I just say that one person can make a difference, however to be more realistic, depending on the severity of the condition, it may take a network of people to help someone out of this hole.
