Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

I had a very good friend here tell me that there really is no such thing as a nervous breakdown and I trust this person but I wanted to know what everyone else thinks. I've been doing some research online mostly a google search and from what I can determine it really isn't a medical term but is used to describe a very wide range of symptoms from psychosis to paranoia extreme to mild to just a stress overload that caused panic attacks that bring on uncontrollable crying or shaking or a major disruption in someones life style. Some have even used it to describe severe depression.
I read of one Dr that said that it really is and it really isn't. It's a very really experience of some sort that just gets categorized that way I have had many times that I have considered to be a nervous breakdown but to me it's just a stress overload from having non stop panic attacks or just way too much pressure put on me to perform that I just wasn't about to handle. I have had times that I experiences major paranoia and hallucinations but I've been told that's really more of a psychotic break.
Have you called a mental experience that you have had one or do you let a pdoc tell you what really happened. I'm really confused on this because I've heard the term used here on the board but what does it mean to you? Do you really think there is such a thing but pdocs don't use that term because it's not an official diagnosis. What do the rest of you think, maybe I'm way off base and there really is such a thing and I just didn't find it was going of some literature from the Mayo Clinic.

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...
I really think you put a lot of thought into it!
I think of "nervous breakdown" as a quaint term to explain mental issues that hinder a person's ability to function. It's about as specific as "she has a rash." :)
I've had a ''breakdown' however if it came to the medical terminology severe anxiety.. depression.. and grief would have been the root cause...x
but incorrect broad layman term provides your Dr, your concern of mental dificulty. She/he will diog n provide correct term -s n info..
My anxiety, depression that effected my daily life was trigged by relentless stress. Ya I call my incident incorrectly too. I refer to it as being a mental slip. Mine left me w pc of my memory erased. sorta like to erase some words on chalk board but not all of words in/of diffrent sentances.sigh. Good news is that theres already is med's out on market that r for treatment of anxiety.
R U ok, How r u doing? wanna share? we r here 4 u.
whatever label, it doesn't matter- there is such a thing as a " nervous breakdown " i don't care who says what, i have had them.. lol they are real.
it may not be a medical term in 2012, but they're freakin' real LOL
but who in allopathic medicine traces actual symptoms back to the root of the problem, chemically/biologically/environmentally.. very few do, very few...
so i am saying, PTSD, GAD, BPD, blah blah, anything insert- are all due to what this article is explaining, and while the stressors coming from the examples are quite severe, i believe it is still the same when we are overwhelmed... and manifests as self hate, voices, etc...
no such thing as a nervous breakdown, my ass.
I like Melancholy over Depression - I even prefer Manic Depression versus Bipolar..
The terms may change, but the feelings and melt downs? Not so much : )
There are big ones and small ones.
Stress and life in this effed up western world contribute.
My psychiatrist has had a couple himself.
Just because it is not in the DSM whatever, doesn't mean they don't exist.
