I was at my dear friends house chilling with her child. I wasn't interested in what he had on the TV. so I started playing on her computer. Her computer had just recently been flushed of viruses, and the end result was that she had lost her sound. Sound is actually a very easy fix, so I wanted to be helpful and get her sound working. Before, she had some seriously embedded shit on her hard drive. When I did a system restart, a phony error screen came up, and a bogus anti virus was causing it. I knew right away what it was, but I panicked because getting it off would take time and I didn't want her to see me trying to fix THAT, so I did a system restore. The problem is that she had never before even done a backup, so the restore started it from WAY back to when it was new. I panicked again because she had lots of photos on it on many I'm sure were irreplaceable. So I went to system restore again to see if I could change the date of the restore and try to get it back to the way it was before I biffed it. There wasn't any way of doing so, but what it did was start it over again to restore from the beginning. I panicked YET again, because there wasn't a way to stop the restore. I did a shut down and when I tried to start it again, a specific file from windows was missing, and she doesn't have her windows disk.

She had asked me NOT to touch it the night before because she was taking it to the computer shop down the block to get it fixed.

God, I can be so stupid. All her saved PowerPoint assignments are on there and tons of her favorite songs. She's had so much crap happen to her in the last couple months that I just wanted to help ease some of her woes, and instead I added to them.

Daisy, sorry you have lost the pictures and everyhting else on your computer, but your own memories will always be there.

No one can erase that.

Even the most highly skilled software engineers fuck up in the way I did, Miss D. If your 99% successful most of the time, that 1% is still going to get noticed. I know your hurt and I'm not disputing your right to be. But just because I fucked up doesn't not mean I know nothing about WHAT I fucked up.

hi, my assumption is that all the data is still there.

"restore" in XP restores the system/programme files..it does not remove any data files.

I expect you can find the data via DOS..but sorry I don't know how. You can google it or post on one of the support forums. This would not be messing with the PC further, simply locating the folders and possibly moving some off via DOS copy.

I'm suprised even if it is a small town that someone cannot supply the missing Windows file or reload Windows from an OEM copy.

Fish, what I wanted to do was restore, but what I DID do was system recovery. On her Compaq as well as with many other systems of it's ilk , what this does is wipe the drive and start things over from scratch. It does a low level format on the drive, then put on all the file they think you need on top. Where ever a new file is put, it erases the info of the old file. As far as getting back what might have been left, too late for that as well. I had to do an improper shutdown to save what I could and in doing so corrupted most of the files for the OS, so they had to retrieve the info, take it off the drive and wipe the drive and start over. That second wipe would pretty much destroy any chance for her pictures to be saved.

Bet he won't touch it again! I would be pissed too. Good intentions or not. I am glad he paid to get it fixed for you. I hope you get your pictures and other things restored.

That data should still be there. If they DID re-format the drive then all of your schoolwork would be gone too.
Possibly you may need to re-install the default program for the music files.
Otherwise, they are hiding in there somewhere,unless they did a re-format, which they should NOT have done since they knew you wanted to save your files.
I'd call the tech that did it and ask him outright....where are my pictures. I gather you have never backed up the pictures?

    Wow, it's the middle of the week already!Today is our 11 year anniversary, so we're going out to a nice dinner.  I'm losing a lot of sleep these days, hence a wonky schedule and uncomfortable feelings.  But I know it will pass, eventually.I hope all of you have a peaceful day, and may good things come your way!
