I was at my dear friends house chilling with her child. I wasn't interested in what he had on the TV. so I started playing on her computer. Her computer had just recently been flushed of viruses, and the end result was that she had lost her sound. Sound is actually a very easy fix, so I wanted to be helpful and get her sound working. Before, she had some seriously embedded shit on her hard drive. When I did a system restart, a phony error screen came up, and a bogus anti virus was causing it. I knew right away what it was, but I panicked because getting it off would take time and I didn't want her to see me trying to fix THAT, so I did a system restore. The problem is that she had never before even done a backup, so the restore started it from WAY back to when it was new. I panicked again because she had lots of photos on it on many I'm sure were irreplaceable. So I went to system restore again to see if I could change the date of the restore and try to get it back to the way it was before I biffed it. There wasn't any way of doing so, but what it did was start it over again to restore from the beginning. I panicked YET again, because there wasn't a way to stop the restore. I did a shut down and when I tried to start it again, a specific file from windows was missing, and she doesn't have her windows disk.

She had asked me NOT to touch it the night before because she was taking it to the computer shop down the block to get it fixed.

God, I can be so stupid. All her saved PowerPoint assignments are on there and tons of her favorite songs. She's had so much crap happen to her in the last couple months that I just wanted to help ease some of her woes, and instead I added to them.

OOpppsssss.... fuckity fuck. ouch. Well, these things can work to strenghten your relationship, depending on how well it's handled. You're already on the right track, taking responsibility and not trying to justify it.
The computer place might be able to restore it for you (her) maybe you could offer to take it in, and explain to them what happened,,,,maybe she won't know then.

It's the irreplaceable part that hurts the most. No money will fix that. Help her look for the best repair person you can find. So every effort can be made to get the files back.

That's the best you can do then....just keep giving her assurance and she'lll come around eventually, if she truly loves you. It's a hard way, but one way, to find that out. And remember this if/when she does something similar. :)

When you get those pop ups that want you to run their program to search for virus' Don't click it. Not even the X to close the box. Use Task Manager to stop it.

for those who are involved in this discussion, I AM this friend. Chuggs was in my home thursday night, and while on the phone with his gf, I even told him then NOT to touch it because the computer store was fixing the sound for free after I was done with my class in school. I have had to fix my dvd writer, memory, it crashed because of viruses and when i got it back the sound was not working and then 2 days later my monitor blew . My computer is only 2 years old. I have put almost enough money in it to buy a whole new one. I have pictures on it from when I first got the computer, ones i never had printed off. Pictures of people that have passed away. I have my whole first class of assignments on there, which i was going to put on a zip drive today as back up. I would NOT go into his home and even think about touching His computer or try to fix things without telling him about it first. I would also listen to him if he tells me Not to touch something. We have had a very rocky friendship. And for starfish, you do NOT know me and even know him personally for that matter. NO one knows us outside of this site. What we portray on here is not exactly what we have as a friendship in real life. I know i have fucked up and he knows his fuck up in our friendship too. We have every time worked it out though. I am in collage, an online collage. I need my computer for it. My bf does have a widows disc but the damage has been done, I don't want either of them to even attempt to fix it cause neither of them knows how to ensure nothing is lost. I want, I will have a professional look at it and fix it. Chuggs will be paying for it. Now it all depends on if everything was lost on how pissed/hurt I will be. I have had enough things happen to me in the past few weeks, not just with my computer, but my car, work, family, friends hurting me, I didn't need this too. I understand he was just trying to help, i truly do. But he did not know exactly what he was doing and was told countless times not to touch it as it was suppose to be fixed on monday for free. He did this to himself and to me. We are both bp and very stubborn and our friendship has always had an up and down times. If he does not pay for it to be fixed no matter the cost, then that will end all ties. I start my next class in july, it is a computer literacy class and I have to have my computer by then as it has all the programs I need. my bf does have 2 laptops, only 1 has all the programs I need but he is also in collage and that is the computer he uses as he needs those programs too. So this is my side of the situation, if no one can understand where I am coming from, that is your problem not mine.

The info is not lost. But I don't understand why you couldn't "undo" the system restore. That's normally quite visible.
If she had her windows CD, all you would have to do is boot from it, run setup and then select REPAIR. It will fix the missing files, but all of her programs and files would then be available.
Maybe the tech store will be able to do that....good luck!
