Bipolar Disorder Support Group
Bipolar disorder is not just a single disorder, but a category of mood disorders marked by periods of abnormally high energy and euphoria, often accompanied by bouts of clinical depression. This is the place to talk about your experience with bipolar disorder, learn from others' experiences, and find support.

My children had recently sat down with me and told me that they didn't think I cared about them. They were upset b/c I spend so much time on the computer, spend my money on me...although all my money is spent on bills (had to explain that to them)...and that we "never do anything together" (also untrue).
Amazingly I wasn't very hurt by their words. Is it wrong that instead of being hurt by my children genuinely thinking that I don't care about them, I thought they were ungrateful brats instead?
I love my children. They're my only reason for living and everything I do is for them.

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

It's not terrible the way you feel. I think kids need to learn to find their own happiness, self-worth, and so on and don't need to be "scheduled" every second of the day. My parents played games with us probably once or twice a month, but for the most part we were expected to entertain ourselves. We had tons of fun inventing games and playing together without a second thought to Mom. She would be doing crafts or sleeping (she had CFS) and we didn't stay in her hair.
These days everyone thinks the whole world should revolve around kids. I love my daughter and we do stuff together everyday, but I would be doing her a disservice if I taught her it was all about her. Even at 2 she understands that there is more to the world than her. It makes the world a lot more interesting to realize it exists independent of us and not solely for us.
Hang in there. Just tell them what mom told me. "If your bored wash the dishes, fold clothes, organize your closet, wash a car, rake leaves, and then come tell me if your still bored." We quickly decided a couple of blanket make a great fort and were fascinating compared to dishes. lol
Thinking that makes me not the right person to ask
I definitely pull the "if you're bored then go clean your room" bit all the time. They are spoiled rotten, without a doubt, but they just can't see it. So I might just schedule to start volunteering with my kids at a food pantry or something so they can see how good they have it.
Thanks bcb, wied and katie. I will definitely ask them their opinion on the matter and see what it is that they think they're lacking.
I have tried and tried to instill a sense of humanity (I think that's the word I'm looking for). But neither of my kids get it. They just want more, more, more. Me, Me, Me...Now, Now, Now.
All of my memories of childhood are the same Ev...going out and playing with the neighborhood kids until dark/dinner time. And I wouldn't trade that in for the world.
Tina, I'm not questioning my parenting. Not at all. I've done what I think is best, and although I'm spoiling my kids I need to show them how much more they have than other people.
That will only benefit you and them in the future when they feel the need too.
I'm not a yeller. I don't yell at my kids (unless it's very very warranted). So they know that they can talk to me about everything and anything. For that, I'm proud of myself, and of them.
I think my daughter might be comparing me to another kid's mother...and this kid's mother does absolutely EVERYTHING with him. In a perfect world, if I didn't have work to do, cleaning to do, laundry to do, classes to attend, appointments to go to, and my only social outlet (the internet)....maybe then I would spend my every waking moment trying to please and entertain my children. But that is not how life is.
But there's nothing more precious than time. When I think back to my childhood, my most precious memories are of the times that I spent with my mom and my dad. Not the time I spent with the neighborhood kids, although those were fun memories, too!
