I got a job working for Walmart p/t one time and I dressed up for the interview.

ps. i think your choice is completly appropriate for the position you are applying for, assuming you are going for something in the store, like checkout or whatever.
If you were going for an office position, i'd throw a suit jacket on.

Always dress up for an interview, no matter where it is, or what the dress code is at the place. you want to appear professional and as if you could really be an asset to the company. You want them to think you have the potntial to move up the ranks. You don't necessarily need to wear a suit to this interview, but a nice pencil skirt or dress slacks, with a professional style blouse is important. There are many options nowadays, it doesn't have to be a boring button-down. Wear you hair neat and unfussy (down or up doesn't matter). Wear nice, clean makeup. Nothing too flashy. Simple jewelry. I would suggest closed toes shoes, either heels or flats. Make sure your breath smells good and go easy on the perfume.

I'm the other side of the pond and I've never hired for a retailer. But I wouldn't go for jeans and t-shirt. It shows a lack of effort, and if I thought that the next thing I would think, what will their time keeping be like?

The pair of khaki's I have is a little too tight fitting for my taste. I decided to go buy a pair that fit better. I am going to wear what looks like a polo shirt and dress khaki's. I bought a pair of Ryerds for 20.
