I takelithium but it’s the Zyprexa that made me gain about 70 lbs. I was 90 lbs originally and now I’m about 20 lbs overweight but I am pleased with my weight mostly now that I bought better fitting clothes. I know weight gain is a big downside of bipolar meds so don’t feel like you’re alone

I used Lithium on and off for 10+ years and never gained weight and had good success with BiPolar Suicidal Depression. But Lithium is not a chemical it is a salt. You have to be pretty strict about taking it the same times of day, you have to be strict about keeping hydrated. Since it is a Salt your body processes it differently and if you get dehydrated you can be under on your therapeutic level or can go over on your therapeutic level and accidentally overdose if you take extra pills.

As far as side effects go Lithium's are pretty few. You do have to have quarterly blood draws to make sure your renal system is staying in check.

I don't think I gained weight on lithium. But generally I prefer a weight gain comapared to the the relationship, career damage and possible death.

You need to have your kidney function tested before taking it. It needs a slow and careful increase with blood tests to check the levels in the blodd (and also after going on it).
