Amuseme
I'm helping elderly BFs parents pack for a move to a retirement community and am getting overwhelmed with all the stuff to sort through with them.
I came home yesterday and my mind was reeling. My BF has a lot too. I got really frustrated and told him that if I'm going to stay there on the weekends he must put half of it away. Too much stuff makes me very uncomfortable; it's like it weighs on my body & mind. In my home I've learned to be very good at balancing things and clothes that I love and getting rid of stuff which is just ok. Guess because I've moved several times I've done quite a few clean-outs. It's a spiritual practice to do clean-outs in several cultures.
How do you deal with stuff?
BTW, I still don't receive email notices for replies and I don't know how to look for the posts I've commented in for more than today and yesterday; what's up with that????

Life has been really hard this past year. I'm really feeling down and alone. I can't talk to my family about my depression and anxiety their not very understanding about it. It's really hitting me since my mother passed a few months ago, plus stress from having to eventually move. Also having my niece coming around who suffers bipolar and refuses to take medication for it. Its been...

When i was in the ER February 16th 2025, i was being admitted to ICU where i was for 3 weeks, then had to relearn to walk for 3 weeks in another hospital rehab floor, the nurse told me something that made me feel for over 18 months now that i was finally *safe*. She told me that the guy who raped and beat me 21 years ago now almost 20 years at that time, was in prison as of a month before that...

The moving part and all that stuff? I used to be in the hauling business and when people were clearing out to...say downsize because the kids have all grown and the place is just too big to handle...my best and most appreciated advice for the client was to spend some time thinking what they really need...then really want...then get ruthless by being generous to local charities who will come pick up the stuff for free...and the rest I would haul for a fee.
Problem is...some forgotten treasures do slip through the process. I'm sure you've heard stories of someone buying a million dollar piece of art for a hundred bucks in a yard sale. So unburdening one's lifetime of stuff has it's benefits for more than just the home owners.
Maybe you would have less stress if you just puttered around looking for those little nuggets that might get lost in the shuffle. :-)
Be careful you don't get too stressed out. When I had to move my mom, and she was a Hoarder....I fell apart and had to be hospitalized.
I don't have room for what I don't use and I don't keep it or I'd be cluttered and I hate my surroundings cluttered..
I love garage sales and second hand stores though... I'm happy to go to them and to donate to them.... There's always places like ebay if you want to try and sell things....x
There are of course some exceptions, books, small things kept for memory sake, etc.
If someone asks me to help them clean house I keep repeating the same thing over and over with each item in question, "Why do you have this? Do you need it? Could someone else make use of it?" The idea of donating tends to help a person let go of things they don't need and if you live in or near a major city there's no shortage of places willing to take donations.
