I just started taking generic Depakote, but have not ever taken the real stuff, so I can't compare. I do know that the generic doesn't seem to be doing much for me. Hoping it is because I have only been taking it for a few weeks. Maybe it will get better for me? Dunno. Hoping.

I'm sorry you are having this experience. But, i'm like the other two respondents and have only ever taken the generic. It's good for me, I like it, and it definitely works. Have you told your doctor? Sometimes you can get special permission to buy the real stuff if the generic doesn't work.

I've told the pdoc but she can do nothing as this is all the county gets. I cannot afford $100s per month vs only $3 per month.

Some generics are better than others, just like some people can take generics and it works for them and others take it and don't get therapeutic effects from them. By law the generics are supposed to contain a % of the active ingredient found in the brand name. Obviously you are a sensitive person and I would talk to the Doc about getting you back on the original via samples even. Good luck with your plight, hope you feel better...Maria

They are both Valproic Acid and other than depakote being available in an Extended Release I never noticed a difference => they both made me fat =(

I haven't noticed a difference in generic or the name brand.
But everyone is different.

Think a while back there was talk of it being the case that generic & real deal pay for brand name lamictal were not exactly one & the same.

I dunno, feel suss about certain generics sometimes x
